How to vote in the 2026 US midterm elections: Early voting dates, ID rules and where to get help
US midterm elections 2026 are on November 3, and voters should start checking their voting plans before Election Day. It's crucial to know where to go, what IDs to bring with yourself, and when to send in a ballot. All this little information can save us from a lot of last-minute panic situations.

Rules tend to differ from state to state, so kindly check the details before going out. The information is taken from AARP, The News Record and USA.gov.

Find your polling place

To find the polling place the easiest way is to check the voter registration through the state election website or the county Board of Elections. In Ohio, the voter can use the My Voter Information tool by entering the name and the county. Similar tools are available in Kentucky, Indiana and most other states. Once the voter registration has been checked the voter can look up the assigned polling location. The assigned polling location is based on the home address, the district and the precinct. If the voter is unsure where to start search for "voter location [county, state]" to find the election office.

Can you vote early or by mail

For some reason, if you are not able to make it to your polling place on Election Day, you may have other options. Early voting lets eligible voters cast their ballots in person before the election day. Absentee and mail-in voting come to your rescue, which allow people to vote ahead of time without going to the polls on Election Day.

In Ohio, early voting takes place at the county Board of Elections office, not at your usual polling place.

To request a mail-in ballot, check your state's election website. Ohio voters can download the required form from the Secretary of State's website and mail it to their county election office. Kentucky and Indiana have their own State Board of Elections systems.

It is very important to note that request your ballot early and leave enough time for it to arrive. In Ohio, for example, ballots must reach the county Board of Elections by 7:30 in the evening of Election Day.

What ID do you need to bring

Voter ID rules depend on the state, so check what is accepted before you head out. Common forms of ID include a driver's license, state ID, US passport, passport card, military ID and US Department of Veterans Affairs ID.

Student IDs are not accepted everywhere. University IDs, including Bearcat Cards, were not accepted in Ohio as of 2023 or Indiana as of 2026. Kentucky does accept university student IDs.

Don't leave deadlines until the last minute

Voter registration deadlines vary. Some states require people to register weeks before an election, while others allow eligible voters to register on Election Day.

Mail ballot deadlines also differ. Some states require ballots to arrive by even by the election day, meanwhile others count ballots postmarked by that date if they arrive later.

A US Postal Service rule that took effect on December 24, 2025, clarified that mail is postmarked when processed at a facility, not necessarily when dropped into a mailbox. The Federal Register warned that the mailing date and postmark date may not always match.

With all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats being contested, the 2026 midterms will help decide the makeup of the 120th Congress. Check your state's official election information to make sure you know the rules before casting your vote.
