Elon Musk’s SpaceX Share Pledge: What Each Child Could Get, When, and What It’s Really Worth

Elon Musk has pledged to give one SpaceX share to every child in America in 2027. Based on the stock’s closing price of $146.03 on October 16, the proposed gift would be worth about $146 per child and approximately $10.6 billion in total.

Musk announced the plan on October 19, writing that it would be the “first of many”. He has not disclosed the eligibility rules, the distribution date or the process for transferring shares to children.

The announcement followed Anthropic’s decision to commit at least 5% of its equity to a public benefit fund.

Musk suggested giving shares directly to the public instead.

We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.https://t.co/XzDntVH0vH
— Anthropic (@AnthropicAI) October 18, 2026

How much will each child get?

At Friday’s closing price, one SpaceX share was worth $146.03. With approximately 73 million Americans under 18, distributing one share to every child would put the total value at around $10.66 billion.

These figures represent the stock’s market value. Each child would own a share whose value could rise or fall with SpaceX’s performance and investor expectations.

SpaceX priced its initial public offering at $135 per share in June 2026. The stock subsequently reached $225.64 on June 16 before falling sharply. At $146.03 on October 16, it was about 35% below that peak, although still roughly 8% above its IPO price.

The total value would change with the share price. At $112 per share, the same 72.5 million shares would be worth $8.12 billion. At $200, the value would rise to $14.5 billion. A child receiving the share in 2027 could therefore get an asset worth more or less than today’s $146 estimate.

When will children receive the shares?

Musk has named 2027 as the distribution year, but there is no confirmed date for the transfer.

A direct gift would require a workable system for identifying eligible children, verifying their details and arranging share ownership for those who cannot legally manage investments themselves.

Musk has not explained how these questions will be handled.

SpaceX is a recently listed company with restrictions affecting some existing shareholders. Its shares began trading publicly in June 2026, and the company has used staged lock-up arrangements. Whether a proposed gift can proceed before all relevant restrictions expire will depend on the specific terms governing the shares involved. A pledge alone does not establish that the transfer has been cleared.

SpaceX is due to report its third-quarter results on October 20, 2026.

Could Trump Accounts distribute the shares?

One possible route is the US government’s Trump Accounts programme, which provides investment accounts for eligible children. However, Musk has not confirmed that he will use it.

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service issued temporary regulations on September 30, 2026, allowing certain publicly traded stocks to be contributed to Trump Accounts. The rules require contributions to go to a qualifying class of beneficiaries in equal amounts.

The regulations also impose a minimum holding period on qualifying donated shares.

In general, the stock cannot be sold until the earlier of five years after the contribution or the end of the beneficiary’s growth period. That means a child might not be able to sell the share immediately after receiving it.

This route could provide an established account structure, but it would not necessarily deliver unrestricted ownership.

A direct distribution could offer a different arrangement, but it would require answers on custodianship, eligibility, transfer restrictions and tax treatment. The exact tax consequences for Musk and the recipients cannot be determined from the public pledge alone.

What does a $10.6 billion gift mean for Musk and SpaceX?

SpaceX had 7.696 billion Class A shares and 5.485 billion Class B shares outstanding on July 28, 2026, according to its quarterly filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. That gives a total of approximately 13.18 billion shares. A transfer of 72.5 million existing shares would represent about 0.55% of that total.

Musk has voting power over approximately 6.42 billion SpaceX shares, although that figure includes awards linked to future company goals and does not represent an entirely unrestricted holding. The amount he can transfer will therefore depend on the actual shares available and the applicable restrictions.

The gift would not automatically dilute other shareholders if Musk transfers existing shares rather than SpaceX issuing new ones. It would, however, spread ownership among millions of new holders. If those shares become freely tradable, the resulting increase in available supply could matter for the stock price.
