What caused the Google Cloud outage in the UK?
Google confirmed that several of its cloud computing services were experiencing problems in the London-based europe-west2 region, which mainly serves customers in the UK and Ireland. In an update on its website, the company said: “Multiple Google Cloud services are experiencing elevated errors and intermittent network failures in europe-west2 region.”Google also apologised to affected customers, saying: “We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption.”
The company said the issue began shortly after 7 a.m. local time. By midday, the disruption was continuing, and Google advised affected customers to move their work to other locations.
The exact cause of the outage has not been disclosed. A spokesperson from Google said that Google was looking into the problem and told customers to check the Google Status Dashboard for the latest information.
Google Cloud gives the core structure that many businesses rely on to run websites, apps and online services. If Google Cloud data centres have issues, the businesses that depend on those services can also face interruptions.
Which banks and services are affected?
Revolut is among the services reporting problems. The digital bank confirmed that multiple services were affected, including card payments and ATM withdrawals. Its status page showed that most services were either unavailable or only partially working.“We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe,” Revolut said on X.
Downdetector recorded reports involving Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Bank of Scotland, property website Rightmove, parcel delivery company DPD, NHS England and Royal Mail. However, it was not immediately clear whether every reported problem was connected to Google Cloud.
Lloyds said customers could still log in, although some online services were affected. The bank added: “We are aware of similar issues affecting other organizations and are monitoring the situation closely.”
When will Google Cloud be back up
Google has not provided a confirmed time for the full restoration of services. Its engineering team was still investigating the issue at the latest update described in the reports.Customers affected by the disruption will need to monitor Google's service status updates and announcements from their banks or service providers for information about recovery.
The outage has also renewed concerns about how heavily financial institutions rely on external technology companies. The main question remains when Google will resolve the technical problems affecting its London region and allow disrupted services to return to normal.
