GLP-1 medicines have drawn attention largely for helping people lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes. Names such as Ozempic and Wegovy are familiar even to people who have never considered taking them. Reports of unexpected pregnancies are adding another question to the conversation. Could improvements in blood sugar control and weight help some women conceive? For women who have struggled with infertility, the possibility is understandably compelling. Researchers are investigating, particularly among those with obesity or insulin resistance. Doctors warn against taking these medicines as a shortcut to getting pregnant.

Can GLP-1 drugs help fertility?

They may make conditions that interfere with conception better. But the evidence does not support that they are fertility treatments.” Insulin resistance can interfere with reproductive hormones. Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may ovulate irregularly and this makes it harder to get pregnant.

Weight loss and better insulin sensitivity could help some women ovulate more regularly. Whether GLP-1 medicines offer reproductive benefits beyond those metabolic changes remains a research question.

Semaglutide, the ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Prescribing decisions depend on the product and a patient's medical needs.

What has GLP-1 fertility research found?

A review in JBRA Assisted Reproduction examined possible benefits for women with obesity and PCOS. It considered treatment alongside metformin, a medicine used to manage blood sugar.

The findings suggest a possible role before pregnancy. More research is needed to determine whether treatment consistently improves live birth rates.

Dr. Jacinta Anyaoku, who specialises in obesity and women's health, told ABC News she had seen improvements among some patients. She explained that inflammation often falls after weight loss, which could support ovulation.

Patient observations help explain the interest. They cannot establish how well treatment works.

Why are women reporting pregnancies after GLP-1?

One account came from Ashlee Amborn, whose experience was reported by ABC News.

The 30-year-old had undergone years of fertility treatment to have her first two children. Her third pregnancy came four months after her second delivery.

Amborn said she had taken a GLP-1 medicine for a month after seeking help for worsening symptoms of her ovarian condition.

She credited the medicine. Her account alone cannot confirm what led to conception.

When should GLP-1 stop before pregnancy?

Pregnancy plans need discussion before treatment.

Semaglutide should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Other medicines have different timelines.

New Jersey pharmacist Karen Berger told ABC News that anyone who becomes pregnant during treatment should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Women taking these medicines for diabetes also need a plan for blood sugar management.
