‘Earth-shattering update’: Nancy Guthrie case sparks fury as sheriff says investigators discussed ‘a number of ideas’ with lab scientists

Sheriff Chris Nanos of Pima County made the announcement on social media, noting that members of his task force met with Florida lab scientists earlier this month and discussed “a number of ideas”. However, he did not make it clear what kind of ideas they discussed with the scientists to find NBC’s anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother 9 months after her disappearance.
“The Nancy Guthrie Task Force continues to work with our labs in hopes of furthering our DNA analysis in this investigation,” Nanos noted in a statement shared on X.
With the update, social media commentators became furious, questioning the investigation, which was already in hot water for lack of tangible breakthrough.
One commentator wrote on the new update, “A number of ideas were discussed.” I’M SORRY… WHAT?! This woman has been missing for almost a freaking year, and THAT is the best update you have?! Are you kidding me? Good grief. What an absolute clown show.”
“Probably should've just let the FBI take over when they offered,” an X user commented. Nancy Guthrie -- who is the mother of The Today Show's co-anchor Savannah Guthrie -- was reported missing on Feb. 1, 2026, after she did not show up for church, Nanos previously said. Her family last saw her at her Tucson-area home around 9:45 p.m. on January 31.
The X post also reminded individuals who might have information about her kidnapping. “We want to remind the public that no tip is too small. Even the smallest piece of information could be critical to this investigation. If you know something, please call 88-CRIME or 1-800-CALL-FBI,” the post said.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on January 31 at her home in Pima County, near Tucson. Authorities are investigating Guthrie’s disappearance as a kidnapping for ransom but have not made any arrests.
