Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff faced backlash over multiple incidents on campus before facing heat over the ‘gang rape’ incident
The meeting brought to the fore heavy discontent on campus over his administration’s handling of a woman’s report that she was gang-raped at a fraternity house in 2024.
During the closed-door session, the official details of which remain under wraps, the Ivy League institution’s Faculty Senate fired questions at Kotlikoff as it considered a no-confidence resolution against his administration
Kotlikoff became the university’s interim president in July 2024 and took the job permanently in 2025, according to news agency AP. The alleged gang rape case is not the first incident that brought him to the limelight, as he has also faced backlash pertaining to other incidents of a different nature.
A look at previous incidents
The news agency reported that Kotlikoff has had tough time in the past also, as he faced several challenges, including a dining and custodial workers strike and ire over his decision in 2025 to pay $60 million to settle Trump administration civil rights investigations.
He had also faced accusations from campus activists that he tried to back his car into demonstrators following a debate over Israel and Palestinian rights. Kotlikoff denied the allegations, stating that he was the victim of harassment.
The latest incident of sexual assault occurred in 2024 and gained renewed attention after the victim under the pseudonym Jane Doe, who is a former student at Cornell, filed a lawsuit in September 2026. In the lawsuit, she alleged that seven Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted or exploited her in October 2024.
She also accused the university of mishandling her complaints. All the accused denied her allegations, saying either that their interactions with the woman were consensual or that they weren't involved.
The Cornell Police Department's criminal investigation was stalled after the local district attorney decided that no crime had been committed. The decision was reached only weeks after the victim went to police in 2024
How did Kotlikoff react to Jane Doe’s lawsuit
Days after the lawsuit was filed, Kotlikoff publicly addressed the shocking allegations, dubbing them “deeply disturbing.” He also suspended the fraternity, stating that criminal and university investigations were underway. He also convened a presidential task force to examine how Cornell handles sexual assault.
In an interview with the New York Times, Kotlikoff said that he never followed up to track and understand what had happened to the victim or whether the accused students were punished as part of the school's Title IX investigation.
He further acknowledged that he recently got to know that Jane Doe had dropped out of Cornell or that students had been expelled or suspended over the incident, or that some had remained enrolled at the school.
