Pike, 50, was taken to the hospital after the execution attempt last Wednesday. She remained unconscious for several days. Her lawyers said she is still receiving critical care and remains handcuffed in the hospital.
The failed execution has raised serious questions about what went wrong. State officials have not explained why the lethal injection failed or said whether they will try to execute Pike again.

Lawyers say Pike has suffered severe damage to her arms
Pike's lawyers said her recovery remains uncertain. They also reported that she has suffered severe damage to her arms. Her legal team had warned before the execution that her medical history and small veins could make the procedure especially dangerous. They said she had thrombocytosis, a condition that can cause an increased risk of blood clots.According to her lawyers, these issues raised concerns about the risk of pain and suffering during the lethal injection.
Experts call her survival unprecedented
Pike's survival has surprised medical and legal experts. Deborah Denno, a criminologist and professor at Fordham Law School, told the BBC she was astonished that Pike had regained consciousness and was speaking. Also Read: Who was Corina Contreraz? Denno said there had been other cases in which prisoners survived planned executions. However, in those cases, executioners had failed to inject the drugs into the prisoners' veins.
She said Pike's case was different because the execution drug had entered her body.
Dr Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist advising Pike's defense team, also told the BBC that her recovery was unusual. He said most people who receive a lethal injection die.
However, he warned that many questions remain. Doctors do not yet know how much of the drug entered Pike's bloodstream or what long-term effects she may face.
Zivot had also raised concerns about possible brain damage because of delays in resuscitating her. He said it would take time to understand the full extent of her injuries.
Why was Christa Pike sentenced to death?
Pike was sentenced to death for killing her classmate Colleen Slemmer in 1995. Pike was 18 at the time. She and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, met Slemmer at a job training camp for troubled teens. Pike and Shipp beat and tortured Slemmer before killing her.
