Canada's Defense Minister David McGuinty speaks during Question Period in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, October 22, 2025.

The Canadian defense minister on Saturday (Oct. 17) said that people were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta province that led to a major fire. "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," David McGuinty said at a press conference on Saturday night. The incident occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located some 112 miles from the provincial capital Edmonton.

Armed Forces chief issues statement

Gen. Jennie Carignan, chief of the defense staff for the Canadian Armed Forces, said: "We are dealing with a serious incident at CFB Wainwright, and are fully engaged with federal, provincial and local authorities." Carignan added: "Our priority remains the welfare of our members, their families and their community, and my thoughts are with all those affected by this incident."

McGuinty described the situation as "very, very active and delicate." He said the Canadian Armed Forces along with the federal, provincial, and local authorities were coordinating the emergency response. The neighboring community of Wainwright was providing medical and firefighting support.

The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire had crossed the military base's boundary and was spreading swiftly due to strong winds. No evacuation order had been issued.

Mark Carney speaks on incident

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has described the incident as "significant and tragic", adding that it was affecting many military personnel. In a social media post, Prime Minister Mark Carney said: "Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected." Carney said that the federal government was working closely with officials and local authorities in Alberta.

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with PM Carney and the defense minister, offering support to those affected by the fire. "Pray for Wainwright, everyone," Poilievre said in a post on social media.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright

The Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is among the North American country's busiest military training sites, where soldiers prepare for combat operations. It houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which carries out realistic battlefield exercises. It is also home to the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides military training.

Neither Carney nor Smith have provided details about the cause of the fire. The incident has come days before a key vote on a process that could lead to Alberta seeking independence from Canada.
