For millions of Americans planning to retire each year, finding the most comfortable city to settle in remains an important decision that creates a significant impact on their quality of life. To make the most of the savings, the top parameters remain housing costs, access to healthcare, taxes and everyday expenses.

The 2027 rankings from the U.S. News & World Report place five communities in Michigan, Florida, West Virginia and Texas among the country's most attractive retirement destinations. While some offer relatively inexpensive housing, others appeal through warmer weather, higher household incomes and access to amenities.

How were the best retirement destinations ranked?

The outlet ranked the top 250 cities out of 850 that it evaluated on the basis of six factors: affordability, quality of life, healthcare, retiree taxes, job market and population trends among people aged 55 and older.

The publication also adjusted its scoring to reflect growing concerns about affordability. Megan Wood, assistant managing editor of home services and real estate at U.S. News, said the rankings reflect "key metrics used to highlight the places that best suit retiree needs."
