US midterm elections 2026: Democrats take control of the House
In a dramatic projection of the 2026 US midterm election race, Democrats are projected to win the control of the US House of Representatives. This victory is set to give the party a powerful platform to challenge President Donald Trump’s policies and investigate his administration during the final two years of his term.

On November 4th, NBC News projected a Democratic victory in the midterm election by projecting that the Democrats will win around 248 out of the 435 total seats in the House. The projection may differ by a few seats based on vote counting, but the Democrats are projected to finish far above the 218 majority needed.

This is a big loss for the Republicans, as they have controlled both chambers of Congress since Trump took office again in January 2025.

The Democrats’ win follows voter dissatisfaction with some of Trump’s key policies, such as the immigration crackdown, tariffs on America’s allies, and majorly, the eight-month war with Iran.

As per NBC News, these problems resulted in the overall backlash against the President and the GOP, with voters voicing concerns over the increasing price of consumer goods, including food and fuel.

Democrats will officially take control of the House on January 3, 2027, when the new Congress convenes.

The expected majority of the Democrats will ensure that the House committees have more power in investigating the administration regarding the use of government spending, immigration, and the president’s businesses.

Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to be the first black speaker of the House.

“I wouldn’t characterize it as investigating them like crazy. We’re going to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution and let the chips fall where they may,” said Jeffries before the elections, as quoted by NBC.

Representative Robert Garcia of California, who is expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, has indicated that investigations could examine Trump’s cryptocurrency activities, immigration enforcement and the handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Some Democrats have also raised the possibility of impeaching Trump for a third time. Jeffries told NBC’s Meet the Press that the party “haven’t ruled anything in and we haven’t ruled anything out” regarding impeachment.

CNN also projected the Democratic House victory, describing the outcome as a break in Republican control of Washington.
