The UK government had launched its Be Ready campaign on October 22. The aim was to ask people to keep three days’ worth of essentials at home. Meanwhile, on November 7, the BBC also reported about how it would keep broadcasting if a prolonged power failure hit the nation.

In this situation the phones may have full battery but they can still be useless in a blackout. This is because the tower it needs to reach might have run out of backup power. This same thing can also stop the pump that gets water to your tap. All of this has now shifted focus to a term known as 'Black Sky' event.

What is a 'Black Sky' event?

During this kind of event, extreme, prolonged electricity blackout could disrupt essential infrastructure and several services across a large area. The situation can turn very serious. It may not be just some ordinary power cuts. Electricity-dependent systems could stop functioning.

The consequences could extend beyond lighting and heating to water supplies, telecommunications, transport. It can also affect petrol stations, banking and emergency services.

Another big concern that is worried is that it can take much time to restore the electricity, which will leave communities without access to basic services. This kind of crisis is generally triggered by flooding, cyberattacks, extreme weather or a big failure of electricity infrastructure.

Why is the UK concerned?

In December 2015, something similar happened. In Lancaster, England, floodwater had knocked out a substation. It has cut power to about 61,000 properties. According to reports, card payments had failed and cash machines were also inaccessible. Petrol stations had also shut, and internet and mobile connections also failed widely.

Something similar also happened in Spain, Portugal, parts of France in the April 2025 blackout.

The preparations in the UK are based on the possibility of major electricity disruption. Notably, the UK government has clarified that there is no specific threat to its electricity grid.
