Lyme Regis, the coastal gem, bursting with millions of years of history

Lyme Regis is situated between Dorset and Devon, looking out over the coastline where the two counties meet. The town is widely called as the "Pearl of Dorset" and forms part of the UNESCO Jurassic Coast.

The coastline has exceptional geological significance as it is the only place on Earth where rocks featuring the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods can be discovered in one location. Together, they record a remarkable 185 million years of Earth's history.

Fossils are one of the biggest attractions

For many visitors the most attractive feature of Lyme Regis is its connection with fossils. The town is strongly connected with Mary Anning, the pioneering fossil hunter whose discoveries made a significant contribution to palaeontology.

Ammonites are especially associated with the region. These squid-like creatures lived in the seas between 240 and 65 million years ago. Today, their fossilised remains can appear along the beaches, mainly after storms or durations of unusually high tides.

Historic landmarks add to the town's character

Lyme Regis is not defined alone by its prehistoric past. The town also has reminders of centuries of human history.

Its other major historic buildings are the Buddle Bridge. The bridge is a Grade I listed structure dating back to medieval times and is thought to have been constructed between 1200 and 1240.

The town has literary connections too, with Jane Austen and John Fowles. Visitors can explore attractions which include the Lyme Regis Museum and the Town Mill, which add to the area's cultural and historical appeal.

Dolphins can be spotted in Lyme Bay

The waters in Lyme Regis offer another reason to explore the coast. Lyme Bay supports a wide range of marine wildlife, like dolphins.

During summer, the waters off Lyme Regis are a regular place for sightings of short-beaked common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. White-beaked dolphins can also occasionally be seen.
