This year’s WrestleDream just became more exciting as AEW revealed that they would be holding an eight-man 'Clockwork Carnage' match for the World Championship in the tournament’s first match ever to have such a stipulation. This was confirmed by the company on Saturday as part of AEW Collision and will be held during WrestleDream 2026 on October 17 at Addition Financial Arena, Orlando, Florida.

WHAT ARE THE RULES OF AEW’S 'CLOCKWORK CARNAGE' MATCH?

Clockwork Carnage will feature eight wrestlers and unfold across two very different stages, making the World Championship match much more complicated than a conventional multi-man contest.

Two competitors, selected at random, will begin the match. Another randomly chosen wrestler will then enter every three minutes until all eight participants have made their way into the ring.

During this opening stage, wrestlers can be eliminated by pinfall or submission. This means the field could already be significantly reduced before the eighth and final competitor even enters the contest. That final entrance completely changes the nature of the match.

Once all eight wrestlers have entered, eliminations stop and a 15-minute scoring period begins. From that point onward, every successful pinfall or submission earns a wrestler one fall rather than eliminating an opponent.

Competitors can score multiple falls during those 15 minutes, and when the clock runs out, the wrestler with the highest number of falls will be declared the winner and leave with the AEW World Championship.

WILL OSPREAY STILL BE AEW WORLD CHAMPION AT WRESTLEDREAM?

While Ospreay is currently positioned at the heart of the WrestleDream match, there is one major hurdle standing between him and the Clockwork Carnage title defense. Ospreay is scheduled to defend the AEW World Championship against Kazuchika Okada at Grand Slam France in Paris. Therefore, his status as champion at WrestleDream depends on him successfully making it past Okada.

Ospreay earned that upcoming defense after successfully retaining his championship against Jon Moxley at All Out and subsequently challenging Okada.

The Clockwork Carnage field will begin taking shape at Grand Slam France, where Samoa Joe will face 'Jungle' Jack Perry in a qualifying match. The winner will secure a place in the eight-man World Championship showdown at WrestleDream.

The card also features other championship action. Mercedes Moné is scheduled to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship against Thekla, while the Young Bucks will put the AEW World Tag Team Championship on the line against their challengers Kyle Fletcher and Darby Allin.

With its mix of staggered entries, instant elimination and a 15-minute race to grab all the falls, Clockwork Carnage is expected to make Ospreay’s likely World Championship defense one of WrestleDream’s most unpredictable matches.
