WHO IS WILLIAM CONTRERAS? MEET THE BREWERS' WORLD SERIES MVP
Willie Contreras is a seasoned Venezuelan baseball player who has been one of the most consistent catchers in Major League Baseball. Contreras, a 28-year-old MLB star, initially joined the Atlanta Braves before joining the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023.
In his career of seven MLB seasons, he has made the All-Star team three times and won the Silver Slugger Awards twice, building a reputation for his offensive consistency and defensive abilities.
Interestingly, this isn't his first experience with a World Series-winning team. Contreras was part of Atlanta's championship-winning squad in 2021, although he did not feature in the Fall Classic against the Houston Astros.
However, his latest triumph is particularly special, as he played a central role in bringing Milwaukee its first championship.
According to MLB.com, Contreras also represented Venezuela during its victorious 2026 World Baseball Classic campaign, making this an extraordinary year for the catcher.
His importance to Milwaukee goes beyond statistics. Contreras has established himself as a reliable presence behind the plate, working with the pitchers and leading them through the key times. That influence was on full display throughout the World Series against Tampa Bay.
HOW CONTRERAS HELPED BREWERS WIN THEIR FIRST WORLD SERIES TITLE
Contreras delivered a remarkable all-around game for Milwaukee in their five-game win against the Rays. He had eight hits out of 21 at-bats with a .381 batting average, four RBIs and one double.
His contribution in Wednesday's decisive Game 5 was particularly important. Contreras drove in a run with a sixth-inning double and later scored as Milwaukee strengthened its lead.
But his defensive work proved equally valuable. According to MLB.com, Contreras successfully challenged 10 of 13 calls using the Automated Ball-Strike system, achieving a remarkable 77% success rate.
He also caught four of nine Tampa Bay runners attempting to steal bases, limiting one of the Rays' biggest offensive strengths.
Contreras struggled to contain his emotions after receiving the MVP award.
"I don't have words to say how I'm feeling," Contreras told reporters through a translator.
The Brewers' victory capped an incredible campaign that included an MLB-best 103 regular-season wins. For Contreras, the MVP award was the perfect ending to a remarkable season. For Milwaukee, it was a historic night that fans will remember for generations.
