INSIDE CHIEFS WR'S NFL CAREER AND MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR CONTRACT
Rice is a 26-year-old American footballer who is currently playing for Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. He is a wide receiver who used to play college football at Southern Methodist University (SMU) prior to being drafted in the second round of 2023 NFL Draft.
Rice quickly emerged as an important part of the Chiefs' offense, recording 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie year. Rice was also an important part of the Chiefs' win in Super Bowl LVIII.
According to ESPN, Rice was drafted on a four-year rookie deal amounting to about $6.5 million. He is presently in his final year with a salary of around $1.6 million for the year 2026. However, his NFL career is one that has been tainted by many off-field troubles and increased financial burdens.
WHY DID RASHEE RICE FILE FOR BANKRUPTCY?
According to ESPN, Rice declared bankruptcy under Chapter 7 in federal court in Texas on November 4, 2026, owing in excess of $3.45 million, despite having only assets worth $677,054. It was learned that a majority of his debt - about $2.1 million - consisted of civil lawsuits, including settlements and ongoing lawsuits.
The assets held by Rice included a Mercedes Benz worth $53,800, deferred compensation worth over $420,000, and his Super Bowl Ring worth $160,000, according to CBS News. Remarkably, his championship ring was allegedly put up for collateral to pay his lawyer's expenses.
Besides that, he has a total of $13,640 deposited in three bank accounts and will earn $1,560,711 as a base salary in the year 2026, according to ESPN.
Chapter 7 bankruptcy normally entails liquidation of the non-exempt assets in order to pay off creditors, although there are some exceptions in bankruptcy laws.
HOW DID THE 2024 CAR CRASH CONTRIBUTE TO RICE'S FINANCIAL TROUBLES?
Thereafter, he pleaded guilty to two felony charges related to this case and received five years’ probation and 30 days in jail. He later served the jail sentence in 2026 for violating the probation.
The crash led to numerous civil suits filed against Rice, thus burdening him further and forcing him into bankruptcy. Despite all these difficulties, Rice is still on the team's active roster as his rookie contract approaches expiration.
