San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans makes a catch as Seattle Seahawks safety Julian Love (20) tries to stop him during an NFL game on Sunday, October 11.

The most viral moment from the 49ers’ win over the Seahawks on Sunday, October 11, came from an interaction between Mike Evans and Trevon Diggs. The 49ers’ wide receiver Evans appeared to have trolled the Seahawks’ cornerback Diggs in the second quarter.

In a video that has since gone viral, Evans appears to ‘name-check’ Diggs. The two had been exchanging words at the end of play. Evans turned around, grabbed Diggs by the shoulders and twisted him to ‘check’ the name at the back of Diggs’ jersey.

Amid the tension, Diggs then gave Evans a shove in his facemask. The moment was largely ignored by officials. The video showed Diggs walking behind Evans, reportedly engaging in ‘trash-talk’, when they locked heads. Evans then reached towards his shoulder pads and turned him to see the name on the jersey.

Evans explains the moment

After the game, 49ers’ Evans explained the moment to reporters. He told the press that he was legitimately curious about who was talking to him. “I was blocking him until the whistle…He said something like I am doing extra…I didn’t know that was him at first,” Evans said.

Evans said he had played against Diggs a few times and that they “have always been cool”. “I honestly did not know it was him, because in the helmet, it is hard to tell sometimes,” Evans added. He further said that the two had been trash talking, adding, “I think I pushed him. I was like ‘Who are you?’ I looked to make sure”.

Evans said he later realized it was Trevon Diggs. He added that Diggs pushed him, which should have been a penalty.

Trent Williams, the 49ers offensive tackle also commented about the incident. Williams said that Evans plays with a huge edge, something that one would not expect a receiver to have. “But that was pretty funny,” Williams said about the Evans and Diggs interaction.

Evans and Diggs have played three games against each other

The players have played against each other in three games with their previous teams. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans defeated Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys. These wins came in the 2021 and 2022 regular seasons.

Roles were then reversed in an NFC Wild Card game in January 2023, where Diggs’ team defeated Evans’.

Diggs gained massive popularity when he led the NFL in interceptions, and earned a first selection in the All-Pro team . He also secured the first of two Pro Bowl nods in 2021. Following that he signed a huge five-year, $97 million contract extension with the Cowboys. He was eventually traded to the Seahawks. The Seahawks elevated Diggs from its practice squad for the October 11 game.
