Was 255 euros fine behind Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden retirement? World's highest-paid athlete earning $300 million annually quits Portugal duty after fallout with coach
Cristiano Ronaldo officially announced his retirement from the Portuguese national team after an impressive 23-year career. He made this decision following a suspension stemming from disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus regarding playing time...

The Portuguese superstar finishes with 146 goals in 234 international appearances, both men's world records.
"It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart," Ronaldo announced his decision via a video message on social media.
"If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it."
Ronaldo also thanked his family, the Portuguese people, and the teammates, coaches and support staff who had been part of his 23-year journey.
"Portugal will always be a part of me," he captioned the post.
WHY DID CR7 RETIRE FROM PORTUGAL DUTY?
Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football on November 5 after a career that had started in August 2003. He made this move amid controversy following disagreements with coach Jorge Jesus regarding his place in the national team.
The dispute started during Portugal's UEFA Nations League matches in September. Ronaldo was left on the bench against Norway despite being told he would play for 30 minutes, and he later left the Portugal national football team's camp before the game against Denmark. The Portuguese Football Federation then suspended him for 30 days and fined him €255.
While the timing has raised questions, there is no confirmation that the relatively small fine directly caused his retirement. His deteriorating relationship with Jesus appears to have been a more significant issue.
WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN CRISTIANO AND PORTUGAL COACH JORGE?
The dispute centered on Ronaldo's playing time and what he described as broken promises from Jesus. After being left out of the action against Norway, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar publicly expressed his frustration.
"To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me whether I was ready to play 30 minutes [against Norway]," Ronaldo said of the incident with Jesus that led to him leaving camp.
"I was completely focused on my physical recovery, integrated with my teammates as always, and thinking that I would not play that day. I had no problem with that.
"This request was outside my physical recovery and training plan - because I was only supposed to play on Oct. 4 at the Dragão - but obviously I said yes. He told me to be prepared because I would play 30 minutes.
"Everyone knows what happened next. I warmed up from halftime, watched the minutes go by, and was not called upon.
"The coach had broken his word to me."
Ronaldo subsequently apologized for leaving the national team camp and said he would accept whatever punishment the Portuguese Football Federation imposed. The forward accused Jesus of breaking his word twice, describing the situation as a serious breach of trust.
Although the suspension was scheduled to expire before Portugal's November matches, the relationship between him and the national team management remained under scrutiny.
CR7'S LEGACY: RECORD GOALS, MAJOR TROPHIES AND $300 MILLION EARNINGS
Ronaldo's retirement marks the end of an era after Argentine legend Lionel Messi also retired from international football last month. The Portuguese superstar finishes with 146 goals in 234 international appearances, both men's world records.
He led Portugal to their historic UEFA European Championship triumph in 2016 and also guided the country to win UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Ronaldo also appeared at six FIFA World Cups, becoming the first player to score at six editions of the tournament.
According to Forbes' 2026 list, released in May, Ronaldo earned approximately $300 million over the previous year, making him the world's highest-paid athlete.
Ronaldo will continue playing club soccer for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, even as his journey with Portugal comes to an end.
