NATALIA SILVA CLAIMS VACANT FLYWEIGHT TITLE
Natalia Silva is the new UFC women’s flyweight champion after defeating Wang Cong by unanimous decision in the main event. The Brazilian athlete got off to a good start using her speed, movement, and different styles of attack to throw 'The Joker' off balance. Silva kept on top of Wang during the first two rounds, always putting the Chinese fighter off pace.
Wang began finding more success as the contest moved into the championship rounds. She closed the distance more effectively and landed some of her best shots late in the fifth. But Silva had already built a strong advantage and continued to control enough of the exchanges to keep herself in front.
When the fight went to the scorecards, all three judges sided with Silva. The victory made her the fifth champion in the history of the women’s flyweight division and the fourth woman to wear the belt.
Silva also extended her perfect UFC run to 9-0, completing her climb to the top of the 125-pound division. Wang may have missed out on the championship, but her competitive showing should keep her firmly in the title conversation.
JOHNNY WALKER SCORES BRUTAL KNOCKOUT IN HEAVYWEIGHT DEBUT
Johnny Walker could hardly have asked for a more spectacular heavyweight debut. After moving up from light heavyweight, Walker showed that his trademark knockout power has followed him into his new division. Once he managed to close the distance against Mick Parkin, the fight ended in devastating fashion.
Walker grabbed the Thai clinch and unleashed a powerful knee that broke through Parkin’s defense. The impact immediately knocked Parkin unconscious, sending him crashing to the canvas.
Walker had originally been scheduled to make his heavyweight debut against Ante Delija in August, but Delija’s withdrawal delayed those plans. The wait proved worthwhile.
With one huge knee, Walker reminded everyone of the explosive finishing ability that once made him one of the most exciting potential title challengers at 205 pounds - and announced himself as a dangerous new presence in the UFC heavyweight division.
