Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyquan Thornton waves as he is carted off the field after an injury.

Kansas City Chiefs received a major blow on Sunday night after their wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a horrifying ankle injury late in the game. Thornton's impressive outing against the Las Vegas Raiders ended on a painful note. The incident happened during the fourth quarter following a 55-yard catch from Patrick Mahomes, when Thornton’s left foot appeared to bend awkwardly underneath Raiders safety Treydan Stukes as he was brought down.

Thornton was immediately attended to by the medical staff before being taken off the field on a cart. The injury created a somber atmosphere inside Allegiant Stadium, as players from both teams gathered around the Chiefs receiver and knelt in prayer while he was being treated on the field.

WHAT HAPPENED TO TYQUAN THORNTON?

The injury came as a result of Thornton making a spectacular catch on a deep ball from Mahomes that gained 55 yards. As Stukes brought him down, Thornton’s left foot appeared to get trapped underneath the Raiders defender as both players went to the turf.

Medical personnel immediately came onto the field to attend to the Chiefs receiver. Thornton was eventually placed on a cart and taken off, while concerned players from Kansas City and Las Vegas watched on.

The Chiefs did not immediately announce the exact nature or severity of Thornton’s injury, leaving his status uncertain. The manner in which he was taken from the field, however, made it one of the most concerning moments of Sunday’s game. Kansas City scored on the very next play, with Kenneth Walker III running in from two yards.

THORNTON’S HUGE GAME ENDS ON HEARTBREAKING NOTE

The injury was particularly cruel considering Thornton was enjoying a terrific afternoon before being carted off. The 26-year-old finished with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Thornton caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes that gave Kansas City a 17-13 advantage.

His injury also added to a difficult day for the Chiefs’ receivers. Rashee Rice had already left the contest with a hamstring injury suffered during the first quarter and did not return.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid understandably offered a concerning assessment of the Thornton injury during his postgame news conference.

"It doesn't look good," Reid told reporters as quoted by USA Today. "He's gonna fly back with us and we'll get further evaluation later."

For now, the Chiefs and their fans face an anxious wait for further information on Thornton. The immediate focus will be on medical evaluations determining the full extent of the damage and what it could mean for his availability going forward.
