Tony Reno, former Yale football coach, has died at the age of 52, the school announced on Friday (October 2, 2026). He led the school to five Ivy League championships over 14 seasons. According to CT Insider and the New York Post, he passed away after battling illness.

However, the exact cause of death was not announced at the time of filing of this report. This comes nearly eight months after he stepped down as Yale’s head coach in February 2026 due to health reasons. He had been on medical leave since the end of last season. Reno is survived by his wife, Toni, and their children, Dante, Angelina, and Vince.

“Today, we are deeply saddened by the loss of an extraordinary member of the Yale Athletics family,” Yale athletic director Victoria Chun said. “Tony Reno devoted his life to serving others and approached every day with humility, compassion, and purpose. He believed deeply in the power of mentorship and invested wholeheartedly in the success and well-being of his players, colleagues, and friends."

Reno was appointed head football coach in January 2012 and served for 14 years, leaving “behind one of the most accomplished legacies in the program's storied history,” Yale Athletics said in the statement

Under his leadership, Yale won five Ivy League championships, registered seven victories over Harvard in his final nine meetings, and amassed 83 career victories. He held the record for second-most wins by a head coach in Yale Football history behind Carm Cozza, who was 179-119-5.

Dante Reno quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record and the Ivy League championship last season. Playing in its first postseason game, Yale came back from a 42-14 deficit in the third quarter to defeat Youngstown State 43-42. Eventual FCS champion Montana State defeated Yale 21-13 in the next round. The Bulldogs finished 13th in the FCS rankings.

“While his accomplishments on the football field were remarkable, it is the relationships he built and the lives he changed that will define his enduring legacy,” Chun said. "Our thoughts are with Toni, Dante, Angelina, Vince, and the entire Reno family during this time.”

Throughout his tenure as the football coach, Reno earned several accolades, including Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2022 and two selections as the Jack Grinold Division I Coach of the Year by the New England Football Writers, according to the Yale Athletics statement. His coaching staff was recognized as the 2025 Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year following another championship season"
