San Antonio Spurs vs Oklahoma City Thunder: Disappointing Night For Spurs and Victor Wembanyama as they lose to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunders in their NBA 2026-27 season opener
Star Center, Victor Wembanyama failed to turn up in the San Antonio Spurs NBA opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder while getting into a tussle with Thunder’s Jaylin Williams.

Mar 30, 2026; San Antonio, Texas, USA; San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) celebrates in the first half against the Chicago Bulls at Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs had defeated the Thunder in last season’s NBA Western Conference finals to advance to the NBA finals. However, they couldn’t do it this time around, as Oklahoma found a way to stop star Center Victor Wembanyama.
MVP favorite Wemby dropped a stinker today, scoring a measly 12 points, 3 assists, and 13 rebounds. He had a lowly field goal percentage of 7.7, converting only one of his attempts. The Frenchman failed to score a three-pointer, though he still scored 10 of his 12 free throws.
Wembanyama delivered a massive performance against the Thunder in the deciding game of last season’s conference finals. He had scored 22 points, making 7 of his 15 field goals.
Not only did OKC manage to keep the Spurs’ center quiet, but the Thunder also got under his and his teammates’ skin.
Tensions boiled over as players from both teams got into an on-court altercation, with Victor Wembanyama, Jaylin Williams, Chet Holmgren, and De’Aaron Fox at the center of the confrontation.
What happened between the Spurs and the Thunder players?
Tensions on the court boiled over in the 2nd quarter when De’Aaron Fox bundled Chet Holmgren to the floor as the Thunder forward attempted to turn and shoot after receiving the ball inside the paint.
Holmgren’s teammates came to his rescue, surrounding Fox and shoving him away from the Thunder forward, who was still down on the court. But as soon as they laid hands on Fox, other Spurs players came in to defend their teammate, thereby escalating the situation.
Wemby also stepped in after seeing Jaylin Williams push Fox. The Spurs forward got into Williams ' face, body-checking him. Williams retaliated by grabbing the Frenchman’s jersey and getting close to his face and neck. Both players exchanged words before security personnel stepped in to separate them.
What was the result of this altercation?
After the officials reviewed the whole incident, they concluded that Fox threw Holmgren, deeming it an unnecessary act, calling it a flagrant foul, and penalising the Spurs player.
Wembanyama, Jaylin Williams, Jaylen Williams and Kenrich Williams all received technical fouls. Spurs got two free throws on their end, while also awarding two free throws to Holmgren.
It was a rough night for San Antonio and its superstar, who was kept quiet by Thunder's rookie Center Aday Mara. The former Wolverine could be their answer to their “Wemby problem”. Oklahoma City knows that all roads to the Western Conference title run through San Antonio and their towering Frenchman.
While Wembanyama struggled to make an early case for the MVP award, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made the most of his opportunity to showcase his own MVP credentials on the opening night.
Shai was on song against the Spurs, spending 43 minutes on the court and scoring a whopping 35 points in the process. He converted 12 of his 21 free throws, and made two 3-pointers on five attempts. The Thunder point guard also had four rebounds and assisted his teammates nine times.
A great start for Oklahoma City on the road. They will play the Denver Nuggets at home on Thursday. After a tough night, San Antonio will look to bounce back on Friday when they take on the Houston Rockets.
