Former UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria may very well be making his way back into the Octagon very soon, almost five months after losing a fight to Justin Gaethje. The 29-year-old fighter, who lost his undefeated record and UFC lightweight title in the UFC Freedom 250 match that took place in June, had been preparing himself for a comeback from his injuries. UFC president Dana White has finally shed some light on when people can look forward to seeing 'El Matador' fight again. While his next opponent remains uncertain, it seems that Topuria's return is being planned for 2027.

DANA WHITE REVEALS ILIA TOPURIA'S UFC COMEBACK TIMELINE

According to MMA Junkie, White discussed Topuria's future on an episode of 'The Jim Rome Show' that aired on Wednesday (November 4). As per White, who runs the promotion, the two-division champion is set to make his return in early 2027, although no specific date or opponent has been finalized.

"He'll come back in early 2027," White said.

White also pointed out the depth of the lightweight division, pointing to many contenders who could participate in Topuria’s return to the sport. These included Justin Gaethje, Arman Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira, Paddy Pimblett, and Max Holloway.

White did not disclose any names of the boxers who could fight next against Topuria because he stated that it may cause speculation on social media. The update comes only after Topuria dropped hints about his return with a post on Instagram from Georgia.

"I returned to where it all began. Not to reminisce, but to remember. The Matador is coming back," he wrote.

It becomes quite clear that Topuria is going to resume his career since he had been on hold for several months after his very first loss in his professional career.

WHAT HAPPENED TO TOPURIA AGAINST GAETHJE AT UFC FREEDOM 250?

Topuria faced a crushing defeat to Gaethje in the lightweight championship fight at UFC Freedom 250 that took place at the White House on June 14, 2026.

Though he showed glimpses of his famous explosive style, Topuria had difficulty coping when Gaethje gained control of the match. The beatings were becoming too much, resulting in the match being stopped by Topuria's corner after round four.

This defeat resulted in Topuria not being undefeated in the professional fighting circuit and losing his lightweight championship. He has an MMA record of 17 wins and one loss to his name.

Although a matchup with Gaethje is an intriguing one to consider, a bout with his archrival Pimblett would be equally fascinating. The fans can only hold on for now and wait for an official confirmation as the UFC plans to return Topuria next year.
