MEERSCHAERT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER SIXTH STRAIGHT UFC DEFEAT
Meerschaert’s last fight was against Julius Walker in a light heavyweight bout at UFC Vegas 122, which took place at Meta APEX in Las Vegas. According to Sports Illustrated, Meerschaert had trouble finding his feet in the fight as Walker constantly took him down and ultimately knocked him out with ground strikes in the second round.
The defeat extended Meerschaert's losing streak to six fights. However, before the official result was even announced, he had already begun removing his gloves, signaling that his fighting career was over.
Speaking after the contest, Meerschaert reflected on his journey with a mixture of pride and acceptance.
"I've had a good run," he said, acknowledging that he had set several records during his career. "Can't fight forever."
"I have some good opportunities to make money for my family and make a good living. I've had a hell of a time performing for you guys. I can't think of a better job. I'm gonna miss ya," Meerschaert concluded.
GM3 LEAVES BEHIND REMARKABLE UFC RECORDS AFTER 60 PROFESSIONAL FIGHTS
Meerschaert's retirement brings down the curtain on a professional MMA career that began nearly 20 years ago. According to Sports Illustrated, he entered the UFC in 2016 after already competing in 33 professional fights. He quickly made an impression, winning his first two UFC appearances through first-round submissions.Known for his dangerous grappling skills, Meerschaert surpassed UFC legend Anderson Silva to become the fighter with the most finishes in UFC middleweight history, taking his tally to 12.
One of his most memorable stretches came in 2021, when he secured three consecutive submission victories and earned two Performance of the Night bonuses.
Over the years, he also faced several notable fighters, including Khamzat Chimaev and Reinier de Ridder. Meerschaert retires with a professional record of 37 wins and 23 losses, including 35 finishes.
Although his career ended with six straight defeats, his accomplishments and longevity leave a lasting mark on the UFC's middleweight division.
