Dakota Johnson has sold her Hollywood Hills home for $5.92 million after buying the 3,210-square-foot property for $3.55 million in 2016.
Dakota Johnson sold her Hollywood Hills home for $5.92 million after owning the property for about a decade. She bought the house in January 2016 for $3.55 million. The actor earned a gross profit of nearly $2.4 million.

The 3,210-square-foot house became known as Johnson’s “tree house” because of its setting and design. It sits on Marmont Avenue above the Chateau Marmont in the Hollywood Hills. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom property was built in 1947 by architect Carl Maston, who also lived there with his family.

Johnson bought the property after her career gained attention through the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Her purchase price was $3.55 million. The home later became part of her public image after she allowed Architectural Digest to film inside it.

Dakota Johnson sold the Hollywood Hills home after 10 years

The house was listed in late May 2026 through Ruby Fay of Engel & Völkers. It was put on the market for $6 million. The property spent only six days on the market before going into escrow. The transaction later closed in June 2026 at $5.92 million. The final price was slightly below the original asking price.

However, the gross difference between the purchase price and sale price does not represent her final profit. The transactions in real estate also include commissions, taxes, maintenance costs and other expenses. The reported figure is therefore the increase in the property's sale value during her ownership.

Property details and Carl Maston's design

The Hollywood Hills house was built in 1947 by Carl Maston, an architect associated with modernist residential design. Maston built the property for himself and his family. Later, the house passed on to different owners, including television producer Ryan Murphy, before Johnson purchased it. The home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms across 3,210 square feet. Its design includes several elements associated with midcentury modern architecture.

The features of the property include:

  • Floor-to-ceiling glass walls
  • Wood-framed glass sections
  • Poured concrete
  • Exposed-beam ceilings
  • Bamboo landscaping
  • A lap pool
  • A green kitchen
  • Three bedrooms
  • Three bathrooms
  • A location above the Chateau Marmont

The 2020 Architectural Digest tour changed the house’s public profile

The Hollywood Hills home became known to a wider audience in 2020 when Johnson opened it for an Architectural Digest home tour. The property appeared on the cover of the publication's feature. The video showed parts of the house, including its kitchen and living spaces.

One moment from the tour later became a widely discussed internet moment. Johnson pointed toward a bowl of limes in her kitchen and spoke about how much she liked the fruit. It became associated with the house as viewers noticed the display. The story took another turn when Johnson later revealed that she was allergic to limes.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show, she admitted that her comments about loving limes did not tell the full story. The actress spoke to host Jimmy Fallon about the incident and acknowledged that she had learned she was allergic to the fruit.

The lime story became part of the public conversation around the house. Johnson later referenced the incident herself in a 2024 promotional appearance for Saturday Night Live. The episode also helped make the home recognisable beyond real estate and architecture coverage.

From Fifty Shades of Grey earnings to a multimillion-dollar sale

Johnson purchased the property in 2016, during the period when the Fifty Shades of Grey films had established her as a leading actor. The first film in the franchise was released in 2015. Its success was followed by two sequels.

She kept the house for about 10 years. During that period, the property became one of the better-known homes associated with the actor. Its connection with Architectural Digest also gave it a public history that went beyond its real estate value.

The $3.55 million purchase in 2016 and $5.92 million sale in 2026 show a difference of about $2.37 million. The property, therefore, increased in reported sale value by around 67% between Johnson's purchase and sale prices.
