How did Satya Nadella change Microsoft’s fortunes?
When Nadella became Microsoft’s CEO in February 2014, the company was facing serious challenges. Apple had strengthened its position in smartphones, Google’s Android was widely used, and Amazon was expanding its cloud computing business. Microsoft’s attempt to enter the mobile phone market through its $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s handset business had also failed to deliver the expected results.
Nadella took a different approach. Instead of depending mainly on Windows and personal computers, he made cloud computing a central part of Microsoft’s business strategy. The company expanded Azure, its cloud platform, and invested in subscription-based products that generated regular revenue.
Microsoft also acquired businesses such as LinkedIn and GitHub, strengthening its position in professional networking and software development. Its investment in artificial intelligence later became another major part of its growth strategy.
Nadella played an important role in Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI. In November 2023, when OpenAI’s board unexpectedly removed Sam Altman as CEO, Nadella publicly supported Altman’s return and offered him a role at Microsoft. Altman eventually returned to OpenAI.
How much Microsoft stock does Nadella own?

Nadella is not Microsoft’s largest individual shareholder. That position belongs to former CEO Steve Ballmer, who is estimated to own around 319 million shares, representing roughly 4% of the company. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has also retained a substantial holding despite giving away much of his wealth through philanthropy.
