OpenAI acquired his startup in 2024. Now Alexander Embiricos leads a new AI product

Alexander Embiricos had spent five years building a product to help software engineers collaborate before OpenAI acquired his startup called Multi in 2024. He then became a product lead on Codex, OpenAI's AI coding agent and later moved into a broader product leadership role at the company.

His career has taken him from developing software for remote collaboration to building AI products designed to take on more complex tasks.

During a December 2025 interview with Lenny Rachitsky, Embiricos discussed his experience building Multi and his work on Codex, which helps developers carry out software engineering tasks.

The Startup He Spent Five Years Building

Embiricos had co-founded Multi with Charley Ho and served as its CEO. The company had previously been known as Remotion. The firm created a collaboration platform designed to help remote teams work together through video calls and shared screens.

It had features of screen sharing collaboration for up to 10 people. Customizable keyboard shortcuts and even automatic links to code, designs and documents. The platform aimed to make it easier for software engineers to work together on projects without relying just on conventional video calls.

Multi had raised $13 million from investors Greylock and First Round Capital before its acquisition, as per TechCrunch report.

Why OpenAI Acquired Multi

OpenAI had announced the acquisition on June 24, 2024. And the deal was described as an acqui-hire as most of Multi's roughly five person team was expected to join OpenAI.

Multi also announced that its service would shut down after July 24, 2024, bringing its run as an independent collaboration platform to an end.

After the announcement, Embiricos said, “We’re beyond excited to share that Multi is joining OpenAI,” adding, “Thank you to everybody who used Multi. It was a privilege building with you, and we learned a ton from you.”

The acquisition marked a change in direction for Embiricos and the team. Multi said in its acquisition announcement that it had been exploring how people could work with computers through AI. Embiricos also announced that he had joined OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop team, according to VentureBeat.

How Alexander Embiricos Went From Multi to Codex

Embiricos later became a product lead on OpenAI's Codex team.

The role differed from his work at Multi. The startup focused on helping people collaborate remotely, while Codex was designed to assist directly with coding tasks.

In a September 2025 discussion published by Andreessen Horowitz, Embiricos spoke about Codex's development, its early results and the safety challenges involved in building AI agents for software engineering.

His work on Codex placed him at the centre of OpenAI's efforts to develop AI tools for software developers.

What Embiricos Is Working on at OpenAI Now

Embiricos has since moved into a broader product leadership role. In October 2026, TechCrunch identified him as the product lead for Dots, OpenAI's always-on personal AI agent, which is designed to work toward goals in the background and connect with users' apps.
