How is Kimberly Guilfoyle related to California governor Gavin Newsom? The surprising link between two political figures
Kimberly Guilfoyle and Gavin Newsom’s personal history connects two big names from opposite sides of the American political spectrum. The former couple tied the knot in December 2001 and divorced in 2005, before Newsom became governor of California and Guilfoyle rose to prominence in conservative media and Republican politics.

Politics often brings together people whose careers later move in very different directions. Kimberly Guilfoyle and Gavin Newsom are one such example. Guilfoyle and Newsom shared a chapter of their personal and professional lives together in San Francisco once married to each other before Guilfoyle went on to become a conservative political figure and Newsom became governor of California.

Their relationship continues to be an interesting connection between two characters on opposite ends of American politics. Since then their careers, public statements and party affiliations have gone their separate ways, and their history is relevant to an understanding of where each of them has ended up.

Who is Kimberly Guilfoyle?

Kimberly Guilfoyle is an American lawyer, former television legal analyst and political personality. She initially established her career in law, working as a prosecutor in California before getting into television and conservative politics.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Guilfoyle earned her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Davis, and later graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law. She was admitted to practise law in California in 1994 and worked in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

Guilfoyle subsequently established a media career as a legal analyst for CourtTV and later worked at Fox News. After leaving the network in 2018, she became increasingly involved in Republican politics and fundraising for Donald Trump.

Her political profile grew further through her connection with Donald Trump Jr., to whom she was earlier engaged, and her work supporting the Trump political movement.

How is Kimberly Guilfoyle related to Gavin Newsom?

Guilfoyle is Gavin Newsom’s former wife. The duo tied the knot in December 2001 and divorced in 2005, ending a relationship that started before Newsom became a nationally prominent Democratic politician.

Newsom, who later became governor of California, was elected mayor of San Francisco in late 2003. During his mayoral tenure, Guilfoyle served as a political representative for her husband while continuing to pursue her own media profession.

Although Newsom was a Democrat and Guilfoyle was a Republican, their political differences did not prevent them from building a life together. Their marriage, however, eventually concluded as both pursued demanding professional careers.

Their relationship later became a point of contrast as Newsom continued his career in Democratic politics while Guilfoyle became an influential personality in Republican circles.

From San Francisco’s first couple to opposing political worlds

Newsom’s election as mayor in 2003 placed the duo in the limelight. Guilfoyle balanced her position as San Francisco’s first lady with her work as a legal analyst, spending time between California and New York.

Their marriage was eventually dissolved in 2005. In his memoir, Newsom explained difficulties in their relationship, that includes his sense that they sometimes had to perform the roles expected of them publicly.

Their unexpected connection through Charlie Kirk

The former couple’s paths reportedly crossed again politically through Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was assassinated on a Utah college campus in September 2025.

Reportedly, Newsom asked Guilfoyle to introduce him to Kirk ahead of the launch of his podcast, This Is Gavin Newsom. Kirk appeared on its inaugural episode in March 2025.

During their talks, Newsom agreed that transgender athletes should not be permitted to compete in girls’ sports. Kirk subsequently presented the exchange as a proof that Newsom had moved towards a position supported by conservatives.

The episode featured how the former couple’s connections could extend across political divisions even as their public identities remained markedly different.

Guilfoyle’s diplomatic role and recent controversy

Guilfoyle later served as the United States ambassador to Greece under President Donald Trump. However, her diplomatic career came under scrutiny after allegations reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The report alleged that Guilfoyle asked Eric Deters, a former Kentucky congressional candidate and Trump donor, to pay a $100,000 American Express bill in exchange for access to White House authorities. It also reported that Greek business leaders lobbying the United States for contracts paid for luxury business travel involving Guilfoyle.

Guilfoyle denied the allegations, explaining them as false and citing that she intended to “vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.”

She resigned on Tuesday morning after the White House asked her to step down. The White House stated her as a “wonderful asset to the team.”

Could their past relationship affect Newsom politically?

The history between Guilfoyle and Newsom therefore provides a striking example of how personal relationships can outlast shared political circumstances. Once married and working within San Francisco’s political world, they have since become connected with opposing political movements.
