Social Security Payments October 2026: October brings a slightly unusual start to the Social Security payment calendar. Some beneficiaries will see their money arrive on Friday, October 2, while SSI recipients are scheduled to receive their October payment on Thursday, October 1.

The two programs follow different payment rules, which is why the dates can look confusing when they appear next to each other on the calendar. SSI is generally paid on the first day of the month. Social Security follows a separate schedule based on when someone began receiving benefits or, for many beneficiaries, their date of birth.

The October 2 payment applies to a specific group rather than everyone receiving Social Security.

People who were receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 are generally paid on the third day of the month. The same third-of-the-month schedule applies to people who receive both Social Security and SSI.

For October 2026, that payment moves to Friday, October 2 because October 3 falls on a Saturday. SSA's rules move payments scheduled for a weekend or federal holiday to the preceding business day.

That means the October 2 deposit should not be mistaken for the main round of Wednesday Social Security payments later in the month.

Why does the October payment arrive early?

The early date is simply a calendar issue. October 3, 2026, is a Saturday. Since the regular payment date falls on a non-business day, the payment is made on the previous business day.

SSI follows a similar rule. Its payment is normally due on the first day of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In October, October 1 is a Thursday, so the October SSI payment remains on October 1.

How much are Social Security payments in 2026?

The amount deposited into an individual's account depends on the person's benefit record, work history and other circumstances. An average is therefore not the same thing as a guaranteed payment.

The SSA's August 2026 statistics put the average monthly retirement benefit at $2,033.27. The average disability benefit was $1,498.94, while the average survivor benefit was $1,635.70.

SSI payments are different because the program is needs-based. The average federal SSI payment was $738.73 in August 2026, according to the SSA. The maximum federal SSI payment for an eligible individual in 2026 is $994 a month, although the amount actually received can be lower because of countable income and other rules.

When are the other Social Security payments in October?

For most Social Security beneficiaries who started receiving benefits after April 30, 1997, the payment date depends on the beneficiary's date of birth.

The October 2026 schedule is:

  • October 14: Birthdays from the 1st through 10th
  • October 21: Birthdays from the 11th through 20th
  • October 28: Birthdays from the 21st through 31st
These Wednesday payments make up the main October distribution for beneficiaries covered by the standard birthday-based schedule.

There is one detail that can easily be missed. If someone receives benefits based on another person's work record, SSA says the payment schedule uses the other person's date of birth.

When will the 2027 Social Security COLA be announced?

October also brings attention to the next Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. The SSA says the 2027 COLA will be announced in October 2026. The agency has not yet officially determined the percentage at this point. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, but that figure does not determine the 2027 increase.
