Microsoft, Amazon and Google may spend $600 billion on AI in 2026. Will investors see returns?
Strong demand for artificial intelligence is giving cloud companies more business, but keeping up with that demand is becoming an expensive undertaking. Microsoft, Amazon and Google are preparing to report earnings as investors look for signs that their spending on AI can deliver returns without putting further pressure on cash flow.

The three companies could spend as much as $600 billion combined in 2026, with their contracted cloud business backlog approaching $1.7 trillion, as per a Reuters report. Now investors are growing more concerned about the cost of financing the infrastructure needed to support AI services.

Big Tech’s AI Spending Is Raising Questions About Returns

Amazon has outlined about $220 billion in capital spending for 2026, Alphabet's investment plans are estimated at $195 billion to $205 billion. While Microsoft's calendar year spending could reach about $175 billion including finance leases.

Much of the money is going toward data centers, chips and other computing infrastructure. The challenge is that companies must spend heavily to expand capacity before they can fully benefit from the additional business.

Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management, told Reuters, "The appetite for capital expenditure alone is slowing rapidly," adding, "For Amazon, Google and Microsoft specifically the growth in their cloud companies is a very important line item that will signal if further growth in capital expenditure can be funded without further risks of contracting free cash flow."

Cloud Growth Will Be Key to Microsoft, Amazon and Google Earnings

The cloud businesses are expected to deliver strong growth in the September quarter. Google Cloud revenue is forecast to rise 95.1% year over year to $29.57 billion. Amazon Web Services is expected to grow 38.2% and Microsoft's Azure business projected to expand 47.7%.

Forecasts show continued demand for cloud computing but growth alone may not be enough to reassure investors. They also want to see whether the businesses can generate enough cash to support further investment.

According to Reuters, Alphabet is expected to burn cash for a second consecutive quarter and Amazon for a third. Microsoft, meanwhile, is forecast to generate more than $8 billion in cash flow. These figures are analyst expectations and not reported results.

Google search revenue growth is expected to slow to 14.7% from 16.8% in the previous quarter, but Alphabet's overall revenue is forecast to increase 25.2% to $128.18 billion.

Microsoft to Give Investors a Closer Look at Azure

Microsoft is set to report earnings under a revised business structure, grouping cloud, AI and business software under a division called “Agents and Infra.” Windows, gaming and advertising sales will fall under “Devices and Consumer.”

The company will also disclose Azure's quarterly revenue in dollar terms. Analysts expect Azure sales to reach $33.06 billion, helping drive a forecast 16.7% increase in Microsoft's total revenue to $90.66 billion.

When Will Microsoft, Amazon and Google Report Earnings

Microsoft and Alphabet are scheduled to report earnings on October 28, followed by Amazon on October 29.

The market's reaction to Meta's latest results has already shown how closely investors are watching spending plans. Its shares fell nearly 7% the following day after higher investment plans overshadowed better-than-expected revenue growth, Reuters reported.

The upcoming results will show whether Microsoft, Amazon and Google can meet expectations for cloud growth while addressing concerns about the cost of their AI ambitions.
