Alexandr Wang, Meta's 29-year-old chief AI officer, is gaining attention since he helped turn the company's new personal AI agent Muse into an App Store hit. Wang's approach has also been different as he combined an aggressive AI push with a different type of social media campaign. This made him one of the most visible faces of Meta's artificial intelligence strategy.

Who is Alexandr Wang?

Wang is currently 29-years-old and grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He belongs to a family of physicists who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He started programming as a teenager and joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015.

Notably, he left MIT after his freshman year at 19. In 2016, he co-founded Scale AI with Lucy Guo. It focused on preparing and evaluating the huge amounts of data needed to train AI systems.

Scale became a major supplier to technology companies as the demand for AI grew. This success made Wang one of the youngest self-made billionaires. Forbes estimated his net worth at $3.2 billion as of October 5.

Wang's path in becoming one of Meta's top AI executives?

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta invested $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale AI in June 2025. Wang stepped down as the CEO and joined Meta at the age of 28. His task was to help overhaul the company's AI operations and he later became the leader of Meta's new superintelligence operation.

He also helped recruit leading AI researchers and oversaw work on a new generation of AI models. Meta released Muse Spark, the first model developed under the new operation , in April. Wang acknowledged at the time that it was not yet among the industry's leading frontier AI models.

What makes Muse different?

Muse is designed to do more than simply answer questions. It is a personal AI agent that can act on a user's behalf. The system can send mails, shop online and complete various tasks using its own virtual computer. Users can decide which services Muse is allowed to access.

The app launched on September 8 and quickly climbed Apple's US App Store rankings, overtaking ChatGPT. Meta's stock also rose nearly 20% since Muse's early-September debut, reported The Wall Street Journal.

Wang's social media strategy

He has promoted Muse in a style that is very different from traditional corporate executives. At Meta's annual developer conference in September, he appeared on stage wearing a mullet, a 1990s-style camouflage T-shirt with deer, black pants and camouflage Crocs.

After social media users speculated that the outfit cost thousands of dollars, Wang said the shirt was a $30thrift-store purchase from Santa Cruz.

Wang also posts memes, jokes, and comments about competitors on X. After Muse launched, he posted more than 300 times, including 100 posts in one five-day period.

Many posts featured Jolly, Muse's fuzzy mascot, while others highlighted users saying the AI agent had saved them money or handled everyday tasks.
