Koch's idea grew out of his family's brewing history. He returned to a recipe developed by his great great grandfather. And began making beer in his kitchen and took his product to bars himself. It was a modest start for a company that would go on to generate billions of dollars in annual revenue.
Forbes estimated Koch's net worth at $1.6 billion in an August 2023 profile that also explored how he manages his investments.
A Family Recipe Became the Starting Point
Koch studied at Harvard and earned graduate degrees in business and law before joining Boston Consulting Group. He worked as a management consultant before deciding to pursue brewing in 1984.His family had been involved in brewing for generations. Koch returned to a recipe developed by his great-great-grandfather in the 1870s and began experimenting with small batches at home.
According to Harvard Business School Alumni's An Entrepreneurial Journey, Koch carried unmarked bottles of beer in his briefcase and approached bar managers during lunch breaks. He needed to persuade them to try a product from a company that had yet to establish itself in a crowded market.
Rather than waiting for customers to discover the beer, Koch went out to sell it. Those early conversations helped him introduce the product to bars and begin building a customer base.

The Money That Got Boston Beer Started
Koch put $100000 of his own money into the business and raised another $140000 from supporters. The combined $240,000 helped launch Boston Beer Company in 1984.Samuel Adams Boston Lager reached consumers in 1985. That same year, the beer was named “Best Beer in America” in the Great American Beer Festival's consumer preference poll, giving the young brand early recognition.
Boston Beer Became the Foundation of His Fortune
Forbes reported that Boston Beer generated $2.1 billion in revenue in 2022. The figure refers to the company's revenue that year, not Koch's personal earnings.Koch has taken a different approach to investing outside his business. He has said he does not believe he can consistently outsmart professional investors and does not want to spend his time trying to predict market movements.
Why Koch Prefers a Different Approach to Investing
The Forbes profile described a system in which a longtime assistant handles trades, selecting individual stocks from a predetermined list of indexes, including the S&P 500 and Russell 2000. The strategy also involves harvesting investment losses.Koch's thinking rests on a distinction between building wealth and keeping it. Starting Boston Beer required him to commit his money and effort to one business. Managing investments, he believes, calls for diversification.
He told Forbes, “You acquire wealth by concentrating your risk. You preserve it by diversifying your risk.”
His First Stock Purchase Came at Age 12
Koch's interest in investing began long before Boston Beer. Growing up in Cincinnati, he saved money from childhood jobs and bought two shares of Procter & Gamble at around age 12.According to Forbes, he continued to hold the shares as stock splits and reinvested dividends increased their value. That investment was only a small part of his eventual fortune, which came primarily from building Boston Beer.
Koch success began with a family recipe and $100,000 of his own money. The company he founded grew into a multibillion dollar business, his investing philosophy shows the difference he draws between taking risks to build wealth and also diversifying to preserve it.
