American rapper Jay-Z invested $1 million in New Jersey Nets in January 2004. Nine years later when he prepared to sell his stake in the team his total interests in Nets and Barclays Center were reportedly estimated to be about $2.35 million.

The rapper's decision to give up his ownership stake came as he launched Roc Nation Sports and moved into representing professional athletes. Although his role as a Nets co-owner was coming to an end. He expected to retain his interest in Barclays Center.

How Jay-Z's $1 Million Nets Investment Hit $2.35 Million

Jay-Z held one-fifteenth of 1% of the Nets. And one fifth of 1% of Barclays Center which was valued at $1 billion. His stake in the team was estimated to be worth $350000. While his interest in the arena was valued at $2 million.

Together the two holdings were estimated to be worth $2.35 million. However the exact return on his investment remained uncertain because the buyer and purchase price of his Nets stake had not been disclosed.

So assuming Jay-Z had not invested additional money beyond his initial $1 million, the combined value represented a gain of 135% over nine years. Over the same period even Berkshire Hathaway stock had risen by approximately 85%.

The 135% figure was therefore an estimate based on the value of his combined holdings, not a confirmed return from selling his stake in the team alone.

Why Jay-Z Sold His Brooklyn Nets Stake

His decision to leave the Nets' ownership group was reportedly tied to launch of Roc Nation Sports, which aimed to represent professional athletes, as per the Forbes report. NBA rules prevented him from owning a team while representing players in the league, meaning he had to relinquish his stake if he wanted to represent NBA players.

Earlier that month, Roc Nation Sports had signed New York Yankees star Robinson Cano as its first client. Representing a Major League Baseball player did not conflict with NBA ownership rules, but representing basketball players would.

In a letter published on his website, Life + Times, Jay-Z explained that NBA rules required him to give up his ownership interest so Roc Nation Sports could operate at its full potential.

Jay-Z Said His Nets Ownership Was Never Just About Money

Jay-Z was a prominent figure in the investment group that helped bring the Nets from New Jersey to Brooklyn. He was also involved in marketing and the launch of the team during its first season in Brooklyn.

While announcing his departure he said that being part of the Nets organization had surpassed some of his greatest ambitions. He stressed that his involvement had been about the team and Brooklyn rather than simply making an investment.

Jay-Z said, “My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun,” as quoted by Forbes.

Jay-Z Expected to Continue Profiting From Barclays Center

Selling his stake in the Nets did not mean Jay-Z would lose all his financial connections to the franchise. He was expected to retain his interest in Barclays Center, which Forbes valued at $2 million.

His other business connections to the arena included a Rocawear store and his 40/40 Club. Forbes reported that these interests, alongside his arena stake, would allow him to continue profiting from his association with the Nets and Barclays Center after giving up direct ownership of the team.
