Income tax deadline extended: ITR due date moved to November 21
The CBDT has extended the income tax return filing deadline for certain taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit. The ITR deadline for AY 2026-27 has moved from October 31 to November 21, 2026. The tax audit report deadline has also been extended from September 30 to October 21, 2026. The extension mainly covers taxpayers whose accounts require audit.

Taxpayers covered by the audit requirement now get additional time to complete their tax audit compliance. The specified date for furnishing the tax audit report has been shifted from September 30 to October 21, 2026. This gives taxpayers and their chartered accountants additional time to complete audits, reconcile information and upload the required report on the income tax e-filing portal.

The November 21 deadline applies to several categories covered by the extension, including companies, non-company assessees whose accounts need to be audited, working partners of audited firms and certain trusts whose accounts require audit. Their original October 31 deadline has been shifted to November 21. However, taxpayers covered by transfer pricing provisions do not get this extension.

The CBDT extension does not change the deadlines for transfer pricing cases listed in the source. For such cases, the ITR deadline remains November 30, 2026, while the deadline for Form 3CEB remains October 31, 2026. Taxpayers covered by these provisions therefore cannot assume that the general extension to November 21 applies to them.

Income tax audit extension: Why taxpayers should not wait until the last day
Chartered accountants cited technical glitches on the income tax e-filing portal and the ICAI UDIN portal, along with pending audits and account finalisation, as reasons the extension offers relief. However, taxpayers should use the extra time to complete compliance rather than simply delay it. If tax liability is already known, paying tax early can help avoid applicable interest for delayed payment.

An ITR filed by November 21, 2026 under the extended deadline will be treated as filed on time for the taxpayers covered by the extension, according to CA Naveen Wadhwa. This is important because timely filing can affect the ability to carry forward business and capital losses and claim deductions that depend on filing within the prescribed deadline.

The tax audit report is prepared and uploaded by the appointed chartered accountant through the income tax e-filing portal. But the taxpayer also has to complete the acceptance and e-verification process. After the CA uploads and verifies the report, it appears in the taxpayer’s Worklist → Pending for Acceptance, where the taxpayer can review and accept it.

The process starts when the taxpayer assigns the CA through Authorised Partners → My Chartered Accountant. The CA accepts the assignment, prepares the applicable audit form, uploads and verifies the report using a Digital Signature Certificate. The taxpayer then receives it in the Worklist for acceptance and e-verification. You can check whether the report has been uploaded under Pending Actions → Worklist → Pending for Acceptance.
