Loans, visas, scholarships: Why filing ITR is more important than you think
For many taxpayers, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is something they do once a year and then promptly forget about.

But an ITR can often prove useful long after the tax filing season is over.

"A consistently filed ITR creates a verifiable financial document, which proves more valuable than a single year's high income," says Dinkar Sharma, Company Secretary and Partner, Jotwani Associates.

Here are some of the situations where regularly filing your ITR can work in your favour.

Why do banks ask for ITRs when approving loans?

One of the most common situations where taxpayers need their ITR is while applying for a loan.

Lenders use ITRs to verify whether an applicant's income is genuine, stable and sufficient to repay the loan, according to CA Abhishek Soni, CEO and Co-founder of Tax2win.

"Most lenders usually ask for the last 2 to 3 years' ITRs, especially for home loans and business loans," he says.

Unlike salary slips, which reflect only current earnings, ITRs provide a longer financial history. They help lenders assess whether the borrower's income has remained consistent over time.

This becomes particularly important for self-employed professionals, freelancers, consultants and gig workers, many of whom may not have regular salary slips to establish their income.

Can regularly filing ITR improve your loan eligibility?

While an ITR alone does not guarantee a loan, experts say it can strengthen an applicant's financial profile.

Consistent ITR filing demonstrates stable income and responsible financial behaviour. This may improve the chances of loan approval and, in some cases, help borrowers qualify for a higher loan amount or more favourable loan terms, according to Soni.

However, lenders consider several other factors as well, including the applicant's credit score, repayment history, existing liabilities and overall financial profile.

“If you have not filed ITR, banks may find it difficult to verify your income. This can lead to delays, lower loan eligibility, or even rejection," says Soni.

The impact is often greater for freelancers, consultants, business owners and self-employed professionals, since they may not have salary slips that salaried employees typically rely upon.

Experts therefore advise taxpayers not to wait until they need a loan before beginning to file their returns.

Can an ITR help when applying for a visa or studying abroad?

An ITR is not mandatory for every visa application.

However, it is commonly submitted to demonstrate financial stability, particularly when applicants need to establish their ability to fund overseas travel, education or living expenses.

Many visa applicants submit two to three years of ITRs along with other financial documents, depending on the destination country's requirements, according to Soni.

Foreign universities and scholarship providers also frequently rely on ITRs while assessing applications for need-based financial assistance, adds Sharma.

"Many educational institutions in India, request the ITR of parents or guardians while they process applications for means-based scholarships, fee concessions, education loans, or hostel subsidies.," he says.

ITRs are also commonly relied upon during student visa applications because they serve as government-verified evidence of the family's financial position.

How else can an ITR help beyond loans and visas?

Many taxpayers are surprised to learn how widely ITRs are accepted outside the tax system.

Landlords of premium residential and commercial properties may ask for recent ITRs before finalising tenancy agreements. Banks often request ITRs when processing applications for high-limit credit cards or credit limit enhancements.

Businesses evaluating applicants for dealership, franchise or distributorship opportunities may also seek ITRs to assess financial capacity.

Similarly, ITRs are commonly used during government tenders, vendor empanelment, banking relationships, business partnerships and investor due diligence.

Missed filing ITRs in the past? What are your options?

Many taxpayers realise the importance of ITRs only when they need one for a loan or visa application.

Fortunately, there may still be options available.

Taxpayers who have missed filing within the original due date may be able to file a belated return, provided the statutory deadline has not expired, according to Sharma.

Where that window has closed, taxpayers may explore whether they are eligible to file an updated return under Section 139(8A) of the Income-tax Act, subject to the prescribed conditions and payment of additional tax.

However, Sharma cautions against treating updated returns as a last-minute solution while applying for loan or Visa.

"Financial institutions often check for consistency over years, and sudden filing immediately before an application may invite additional scrutiny or may call for further explanation," he says.

While filing belated or updated returns improves financial documentation, it does not erase earlier defaults or penalties where applicable.

Which ITR documents should you preserve?

Many taxpayers download only the ITR acknowledgement and delete the remaining documents.

Experts say that can create unnecessary difficulties later.

Taxpayers should ideally preserve the complete tax filing record, including the filed ITR, acknowledgement, computation of income, Form 16, Form 16A, Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), bank statements, investment proofs and other supporting documents, according to Sharma.

These records should generally be retained for at least eight years from the end of the relevant assessment year because the Income-tax Department can reopen assessments within the statutory timelines in certain cases.

Where litigation or reassessment proceedings are pending, records should be preserved until the matter is fully resolved, even if this extends beyond eight years.

Why filing an ITR is about more than paying taxes

One of the biggest misconceptions is that filing an ITR is unnecessary if tax has already been deducted at source.

This assumption is incorrect, as per Sharma.

"TDS is just a mechanism for tax collection by the Government and it does not substitute the statutory obligation to file ITR where it is otherwise required," he says.

Similarly, many people believe they never need to file an ITR if their income is below the taxable threshold.

While that may be true in some cases, filing may still become necessary where specific conditions prescribed under the Income-tax Act are triggered, such as certain high-value transactions, foreign assets or other notified criteria.

More importantly, failing to build a regular filing history can create avoidable hurdles later in life.

As Sharma points out, an ITR today functions not only as a tax document but also as a recognised proof of financial credibility that can influence access to loans, visas, scholarships and several commercial opportunities.
