You make a UPI payment, your bank account is debited, but the recipient says the money has not arrived. Should you pay again or wait for a refund? Before making another payment, check the transaction status.

Here is how the UPI reversal process works, how long a refund can take, and what you should do if the money is not returned on time.

Why do UPI payments fail even when money is debited?

A UPI transaction involves multiple systems, including the sender's bank, the beneficiary's bank, NPCI's switching infrastructure and the UPI app. A technical glitch in any of these can cause a transaction to fail or remain pending even after the sender’s account is debited.

“The issues may be due to network failures, bank server breakdown, timeout during the transaction, slow response of the beneficiary’s bank, or reconciliation errors. As a result, you might have been debited from your account but your beneficiary would not have received the money,” says Mukesh Pandey, Founder and MD, Rupyaapaisa.com.

The scale of UPI makes reliable processing and clear communication particularly important.

“NPCI recorded approximately 24.07 billion UPI transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, demonstrating the volume of payments that the infrastructure must process,” says Sarvjeet Singh Virk, CEO of jUMPP.

At this scale, effective exception handling, system resilience and transparent communication are as important to customer confidence as transaction speed.

How long does a failed UPI transaction take to be refunded?

The UPI refund process is governed by the Reserve Bank of India’s framework on turnaround time (TAT) and customer compensation for failed transactions.

“Under the RBI framework, a failed UPI person-to-person fund transfer, where the sender’s account is debited but the beneficiary’s account is not credited, must be automatically reversed within T+1 day if the credit cannot be completed,” says Rohit Mahajan Founder and CEO, Plutos ONE.

For merchant payments where the account is debited but transaction confirmation is not received at the merchant location, the prescribed auto-reversal timeline is T+5 days. Here, T refers to the date of the transaction.

If the applicable deadline is exceeded, compensation of ₹100 per day is prescribed for the delay, Mahajan explains.

This compensation is to be credited automatically, without the customer having to submit a separate claim.

What should you do if your failed UPI payment is not refunded on time?

Customers should follow a documented escalation process rather than repeatedly attempting the payment or relying only on informal support conversations.

According to Singh Virk, they can raise a dispute through the app.

Step 1: Check the transaction status.

Open the UPI app’s transaction history and confirm whether the payment is marked successful, failed or pending. Save the transaction reference number and check whether the recipient has received the money.

Step 2: Raise a complaint through the UPI app.

Use the transaction-specific help or dispute option and select the relevant issue, such as money debited but the recipient not credited. Record the complaint or ticket number. NPCI’s UPI FAQs state that users can raise grievances or check transaction status through participating UPI apps.

Step 3: Contact the bank linked to the sending account.

If the issue remains unresolved, lodge a formal complaint with the remitter bank. Share the transaction details and the app’s complaint reference, and ask the bank to trace the transaction and confirm the reversal status. For merchant payments, it may also be useful to contact the merchant or its acquiring bank to establish whether the payment was received.

Step 4: Escalate the process through NPCI’s complaint mechanism

NPCI provides a Register a Complaint portal through which customers can raise complaints relating to participating institutions and check the status of their cases. NPCI facilitates routing the complaint to the relevant member institution; the bank or institution remains responsible for resolution.

Step 5: Approach the RBI’s grievance redress mechanism if necessary.

If the regulated entity rejects the complaint, provides an unsatisfactory response or does not respond within the applicable period, customers can consider escalating through the Reserve Bank’s Complaint Management System under the current RBI Integrated Ombudsman framework.

The RBI’s 2026 scheme came into effect on 1 July 2026. Customers should review the current eligibility and filing requirements on the RBI complaint portal.

The key is to preserve a record of each escalation, including dates, reference numbers and written responses. This helps establish whether the prescribed resolution timeline has been crossed and supports any claim for applicable compensation, explains Singh Virk.

What details should you keep when reporting a failed UPI payment?

Customers should retain enough information to help the bank trace the payment through the system.

“They should retain the transaction reference number, date, amount, debit confirmation, recipient details and complaint acknowledgement numbers,” says Bhavin Patel, Co-founder & CEO, Vartis Platforms & LenDenClub.

These records help establish the transaction status and support escalation to the bank, NPCI or, where eligible, the RBI Ombudsman, he adds.

While a failed payment can make customers anxious and scammers may exploit that urgency by promising an immediate refund, you should be alert about fraudsters posing as bank employees or customer support representatives.

“Customers should never share their UPI PIN, OTP, passwords or other authentication credentials while reporting a payment issue. A legitimate complaint investigation should not require the customer to disclose these details,” says Singh Virk.
