Different forms of physical gold

You can buy 24-karat gold in bullion, bars and coins. The price of 24-karat gold coins, bars, and bullion will depend on their fineness level. The higher the fineness, the higher will be the price. Hence, a 24-karat gold coin with 999 fineness will be expensive than a 24-karat gold coin with 995 fineness.

On the other hand, gold jewellery will have either 22-karat gold, 18-karat gold or 14-karat gold. Hence, you need to refer to 916 fineness, 750 fineness, or 585 fineness, respectively.

The association also publishes the opening and closing prices of silver of 999 fineness. This type of silver is considered pure or fine silver. One can buy bullion, bars and coins of 999 fineness of silver for investment purposes.

What is Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA)?

According to the IBJA website, the association was established in 1919 as a result of the prevailing circumstances in the market that warranted an association. Currently, it is considered the apex association for all bullion and jewellery associations in India.

The IBJA publishes daily gold AM and PM rates - opening and closing prices. According to its website, "These rates are benchmark rates for the issue of Sovereign and Bonds as per various notifications issued by the Ministry of Finance and Reserve Bank of India. IBJA and rates are also benchmark rates for lending against jewellery by NBFC and Banks as per RBI notification. IBJA has offices in 29 states and is part of all Govt. Committees for Gold."
