What is OCI card?
An Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is an immigration status that is granted to individuals who have Indian origin or roots, but now hold a foreign passport, or are foreign nationals. This card allows them to visit India without having to apply for a visa and stay indefinitely. Such cardholders are also exempt from having to register with the local police for the duration of their stay.

According to the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs, these are the benefits of holding an OCI card

Multiple-entry lifelong visa for visiting India for any purpose

Parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in respect of all facilities available to them in economic, financial, and educational fields, except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.
Registered OCI cardholders shall be treated at par with resident Indian nationals in the matter of tariffs in air fares in domestic sectors in India, along with the same entry fee as domestic Indian visitors to visit national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, national monuments, historical sites and museums in India;
OCI cardholders can practise the following professions in India:
(a) doctors, dentists, nurses and pharmacists;
(b) advocates;
(c) architects;
(d) Chartered accountants

According to Section 7(D) of India’s Citizenship Act, 1955, if an OCI cardholder gets his/her registration using fraud, false representation, or the concealment of any material fact, their OCI card could be cancelled.

If the overseas citizen of India has, within five years after they registered as an OCI cardholder, been sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years, their OCI card could be revoked.

According to the law, if an overseas citizen of India has shown disaffection towards the Constitution of India as established by law, their OCI card could be cancelled. Moreover, if such an OCI cardholder has engaged, been associated or has unlawfully traded, or communicated with an enemy nation with which India is at war, or has undertaken any business or commercial activity that was to his knowledge carried on in such manner as to assist an enemy in that war, their OCI card could be revoked.

If the government feels that it is necessary to revoke an OCI cardholder’s registration in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of India, friendly relations of India with any foreign country, or in the interests of the general public, the government can cancel the concerned OCI card.
