Withdrew your PF? Missing this crucial EPS step could cost you your future pension

Many employees withdraw their EPF balance after switching jobs and assume there is nothing left to transfer. However, the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) works separately from EPF. Even if your PF balance becomes zero, your EPS service history remains linked to the old account and must be transferred to protect future pension benefits.

EPF and EPS operate under the same provident fund system but serve different purposes. EPF is a retirement savings account that accumulates contributions and interest. EPS, on the other hand, records your pensionable service period. The longer your eligible service history, the higher the pension benefits you may receive after retirement.

When you withdraw your EPF money, you’ll get only the savings part. Your EPS service record does not automatically transfer to your new employer's account. If your service history is still linked to an old member ID, those years might not be counted correctly when your pension is calculated, potentially reducing retirement benefits.

Under EPS rules, employees generally need at least 10 years of eligible service to qualify for a monthly pension. If service records from previous jobs are not transferred, your pension history can become fragmented. Missing years may reduce your pensionable service period, which could lower your pension benefits.

Even if your EPF balance has been fully withdrawn, you can still transfer your EPS service record. Employees can submit Form 13 through the EPFO member portal and link previous service records to their current account. This ensures that all eligible years of employment are included when pension benefits are calculated in the future.

To transfer EPS service, log in to the EPFO portal using your UAN credentials and go to the transfer request section under Online Services. Enter the previous PF member ID and choose the employer for attestation. Experts suggest selecting the current employer whenever possible, as this often speeds up the approval process.

Several common errors can slow down EPS transfers. These include incorrect personal details, mismatches in UAN records, incomplete KYC information, and a not updated date of exit from the previous employer. Before filing Form 13, employees should carefully verify all records to avoid unnecessary delays and rejection of transfer requests.

An outdated exit date is one of the biggest reasons for transfer issues. Employees should first ask the former employer to update the records. If that does not happen, they can file a grievance with EPFO and submit supporting documents such as salary slips, appointment letters, and relieving letters to establish employment history.

You should regularly review their service history on the EPFO Member Portal rather than waiting till you retire. The service history section shows all employers linked to the UAN along with joining and exit dates. Any missing employer record could indicate a gap in EPS service history and you should correct it through a Form 13 transfer.
