Bank holidays differ depending on the state and they are published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Apart from national and regional days, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks will observe public holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays, as per the RBI guidelines.
It will be a regular working day for banks on the first, third and fifth (in some months) Saturdays, unless the RBI specified a certain Saturday as a holiday in its holiday list. Banks are closed today on January 11, 2025 as it is the second Saturday of the month.

In January, banks are closed on various occasions such as Makar Sankranti/Uttarayana Punyakala/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Magh Bihu/Birthday of Hazarat Ali, Thiruvalluvar Day, Uzhavar Thirunal, Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose/Vir Surendrasai Jayanti depending on the state.

Banks across India will observe public holidays on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti), August 15 (Independence day) and Republic Day (January 26). Note that Republic Day falls on a Sunday this year.

There are many transactions which can be done online using mobile banking, WhatsApp banking, internet banking but you need first register yourself on the banking platforms to carry out these transactions. Individuals can use online banking to pay utility bills, phone bills, etc. These bills can be paid through the website or the bank’s mobile application. Customers can also create auto-debit for their bill payments. This way, the customer need not worry about keeping track of the billing cycle.

Upcoming bank holidays 2025

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti/Uttarayana Punyakala/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Magh Bihu/Birthday of Hazarat Ali, banks will be closed in these regions on January 14, 2025 — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh), Hyderabad (Telangana), Itanagar, Kanpur and Lucknow.

In observance of Thiruvalluvar Day, banks will be closed in Chennai on January 15, 2025. Banks will remain closed in Chennai on January 16, 2025 for Uzhavar Thirunal.

To celebrate the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Vir Surendrasai Jayanti, banks will remain shut in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata on January 23, 2025.
