The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-KISAN), which was introduced in February 2019, is a central scheme that aims to provide financial support to landholding farmer families, subject to specific exclusion criteria, to enable them to cover agricultural and allied expenses.

Every year, Rs 6,000 per year is sent directly into the bank accounts of eligible farmers in three four-monthly installments of Rs 2,000.

According to the government, more than Rs 4,350 crore has been transferred to ineligible beneficiaries under the PM-KISAN scheme, and states have been advised to seek reimbursements, as per a PTI news report.


According to the scheme's guidelines, the state government and the UT administration would identify the farming families that are eligible for assistance.

Definition of family for the scheme is husband, wife and minor children, as per the PM Kisan website. Under the scheme, funds will be deposited directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.

The following categories of beneficiaries of higher economic status shall not be eligible for benefit under the scheme rules.

1All Institutional Land holders.

2Farmer families which belong to one or more of the following categories:.

i)Former and present holders of constitutional posts

ii)Former and present Ministers/ State Ministers and former/present Members of LokSabha/ RajyaSabha/ State Legislative Assemblies/ State Legislative Councils,former and present Mayors of Municipal Corporations, former and present Chairpersons of District Panchayats.

iii)All serving or retired officers and employees of Central/ State Government Ministries /Offices/Departments and its field units Central or State PSEs and Attached offices /Autonomous Institutions under Government as well as regular employees of the Local Bodies

(Excluding Multi Tasking Staff /Class IV/Group D employees)

vi)All superannuated/retired pensioners whose monthly pension is Rs.10,000/-or more

(Excluding Multi Tasking Staff / Class IV/Group D employees) of above category

v)All Persons who paid Income Tax in last assessment year

vi)Professionals like Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants, and Architects registered with Professional bodies and carrying out profession by undertaking practices.

Note that there is an option to refund the received amount if you are an ineligible farmer. One can visit PM Kisan website and click on ‘Refund option’ and follow the steps to return the amount. Also, the government is identifying such ineligible farmers and requesting that they apply for a refund of the amount.
