PAN-Aadhaar linking fee: How to check status of challan payment

PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline over: The income tax department has provided a clarification on PAN-Aadhaar linkage on its official Twitter handle for those individuals who are having difficulty linking the two. Here is what you should know.

The deadline for linking your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar number was June 30, 2023. The government has not extended the deadline this time, despite doing so numerous times previously

The income tax department has provided a clarification on PAN-Aadhaar linkage on its official Twitter handle for those individuals who are having difficulty linking the two

The clarification came just hours before the deadline for linking PAN to Aadhaar expires.


The income tax department stated in a tweet that the status of challan payments can be checked under the portal's 'e-pay tax' tab after logging in. If the payment is successful, the PAN holder can proceed with linking the PAN to Aadhaar. There is no need to download the challan receipt in order to link your PAN to Aadhaar.


According to the Income tax official tweet, “Instances have come to notice where PAN holders have faced difficulty in downloading the challan after payment of fee for Aadhaar-PAN linking. In this regard, it is to be informed that status of challan payment may be checked in ‘e-pay tax’ tab of portal after login. If a payment is successful, then PAN holder can proceed to link PAN with Aadhaar. There is no need of downloading of the challan receipt for linking PAN with Aadhaar. Further, as soon as the PAN holder completes the payment successfully, an email with an attached copy of the challan is already being sent to the PAN holder.”

PAN- Aadhaar linkage: How to check status of challan payment

Step 1: Login income tax website
Step 2: Under e-File, click on ‘e-pay tax’
Step 3: click on generated challans, here you can see all your failed and successful challlans.
Step 4: In the next tab click on ‘Payment history’ here you can see if the payment is successful. Click on download and save it.

However, if a payment is successful, then PAN holder can proceed to link PAN with Aadhaar. There is no need of downloading of the challan receipt for linking PAN with Aadhaar.

Step 5: On successful payment, an email with an attached copy of the challan will be sent to the PAN holder.

The tweet also said that the Department will review cases where fee payment and consent for linking have been done but linking has not been completed by June 30, 2023.

Many taxpayers took twitter to vent their payment related issues. For most of the users, the tax department replied stating, “May we request you to check your registered email for copy of challan. In case you need further assistance, please share your details (along with PAN & your mobile no.) with us at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in so that our team can get in touch with you.”
