In a move that will bring major relief to millions of car owners across the country, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) requirement for new FASTag issuances with effect from February 1, 2026.
However, KYV will still be required in specific cases where complaints are received, such as issues related to loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse.

New FASTag buyers won’t need KYV, issuance to become quicker
Under the new rule, KYV will no longer be required for new FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans. This means vehicle owners buying a FASTag from February 1, 2026, onwards will not have to go through the KYV verification step that often led to delays and repeated follow-ups.

Existing car FASTag users will also benefit from this reform. For FASTags that have already been issued, KYV will not be mandatory as a routine process. If there are no complaints, existing FASTag holders will not be required to undergo KYV at all.

VAHAN-based verification mandatory before FASTag activation
FASTag activation will be permitted only after mandatory validation of vehicle details through the VAHAN database. The earlier practice of allowing validation after activation has been discontinued. This ensures that all checks are completed upfront, eliminating the need for post-activation corrections or customer follow-ups.
