On April 22, 2026, Kotak Mahindra Bank sent an email to its customers stating that two-factor authentication is now mandatory for government, statutory, payment gateway and other merchant payments through their bank.

In the email, Kotak Mahindra Bank said that to boost the security of your tax transactions, they have added an extra Two Factor Authentication (2FA) step for authorising transactions, following their guidelines. This upgrade guarantees that your tax payments are processed safely and securely.

This security upgrades to government, statutory, payment gateway and other merchant payments.

What’s changing for customers?

According to Kotak Mahindra Bank’s email here’s what is changing for its customers:

1. Mandatory OTP or MPIN Authentication
Once the checker approves a tax transaction, it must be authorised using either an OTP or your MPIN on the confirmation/preview screen. This step is mandatory at all levels of checkers to complete the transaction.

2. Automatic OTP Delivery
If you choose OTP authentication, the OTP will be automatically sent to your registered mobile number and email ID upon reaching the preview screen.

3. Help with OTP or MPIN Issues
If the OTP is not received, you may get an option to resend the OTP. In case an incorrect OTP is entered three times, the OTP option will be blocked. If your OTP or MPIN gets locked after three incorrect attempts, please contact the bank’s customer experience center at 1800 4100 (toll-free), for immediate assistance.

Alternatively, MPIN can be unlocked instantly through the Mobile Banking app.

4. To ensure a seamless experience, the bank recommends that you keep your mobile number and email ID updated in bank records. For any assistance, please the bank at 1800 4100 (Toll-Free).
