Independence Day bank holiday: Are banks open or closed on August 15? Check status

In August 2026, banks will be closed on various days depending on the state, as many closures are linked to regional festivals, commemorations, local occasions, etc. This means customers in one state may find their bank branch open while branches in another state may remain closed on the same day. So customers visiting a bank branch must check their state's bank holiday schedule.


In India, three days are recognised as ‘national holidays’, and all businesses, including banks, must give their employees a day off on these occasions: January 26 (Republic Day), August 15 (Independence Day) and October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti).

Banks are closed today (Saturday, August 15, 2026) nationwide to commemorate Independence Day. The third Saturday of the month is a working day at banks as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, but banks will remain closed today because of Independence Day.


As per the RBI rule, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks observe a public holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
