How to update address in Aadhaar card online

You have to make sure that the details in your Aadhaar are correct and up-to-date. This is because Aadhaar number has to be mandatorily quoted while filing an income tax return (ITR) and while applying for a new PAN card. Other than this, if you are availing subsidy or grant from the Central and/or State government, you will have to provide your Aadhaar number. Further, Aadhaar card works as proof of identity and proof of address.

There are two ways of updating the address in your Aadhaar. One is by visiting an Aadhaar enrolment centre/Aadhaar Seva Kendra (Click here to read how to update address offline and correct all other Aadhaar details) and the other is updating it online by visiting the UIDAI website.

Here's how you can update address details in your Aadhaar via the UIDAI website.


Follow these steps to update the address in your Aadhaar card online:
Step 1: Visit uidai.gov.in
Step 2: Under the 'My Aadhaar' tab, select 'Update Demographics Data and Check status'.

Step 3: You will be redirected to another website: https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/. You will be required to click on 'Login'.

Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number, captcha code. Click on 'Send OTP'. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your registered mobile number. This OTP will be valid for 10 minutes. Enter the OTP in the required row and click on login.

Step 5: Once logged in, select 'Update Aadhaar Online'.

Step 6: The webpage will show you the process of making an updation of the address in Aadhaar card online. Read the instructions and click on 'Proceed to update Aadhaar'.

Step 7: Select the data field you want to update. Do keep in mind you will be required to upload the proof of new address to be updated in Aadhaar card. Click on 'Proceed to update Aadhaar'.

You can click on the preview button to see how the address will be shown on the Aadhaar card.

Step 8: Ensure that the data entered by you on the portal is correct in English as well as local language (if opted for). Submit the request if the details are correct. You will be redirected to the payment portal. You will be required to pay Rs 50 for updating of address.

Once payment is made successfully, an update request number (URN) will be generated. The URN will help you track the status of the online address update. You can also download/print the acknowledgement copy.

What if you don't have Address proof
Earlier, individuals who did not have address proof were offered a facility to update the address in the Aadhaar card via validation letter. However, as per the tweet of UIDAI, this facility has now been withdrawn.

When will you receive new Aadhaar card?
Once your request has been updated, the UIDAI will process your request and new Aadhaar card will be sent to your new address. The process of updating address can take up to 90 days.
