How many days does it take to activate an inoperative PAN

If you have failed to link the Aadhaar and Permanent Account Number (PAN) by June 30, 2023, you won't be allowed to use carry out certain financial transactions where you are mandatorily required to quote PAN. According to the CBDT guidelines, PAN will be inoperative from July 1, 2023 if PAN and Aadhaar are not linked before the deadline.

To link PAN with Aadhaar, one has to make payment of Rs 1,000 through the E-filing portal.
How may days to activate PAN after paying the penalty


The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs.1,000.

According to the PIB press release dated March 28, 2023, “The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs.1,000.”

Naveen Wadhwa, DGM, Taxmann.com, told ET online earlier, "An individual who has missed the last date to link PAN with Aadhaar can link it after the expiry of the deadline also. However, the PAN will become operative again within 30 days from the date of intimation of Aadhaar. For instance, if an individual requests for linking of his PAN with Aadhaar on July 20 (after paying the penalty), the PAN will become operative on or before August 19. Do note that till the period PAN remains inoperative, the consequences of not having PAN will apply. Some of these are higher TDS on incomes, no income tax refunds, etc."

From 1st July, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows:

• No refund shall be made against such PANs;
• Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative; and
• TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the Act.

How to check if PAN is valid or invalid?

Step 1: Go to e-Filing portal homepage.
Step 2: Click Verify Your PAN on the e-Filing homepage.
Step 3: On the Verify Your PAN page, enter your PAN, Full Name, Date of Birth and Mobile Number (accessible to you) and click Continue.
Step 4: On the Verification page, enter the 6-digit OTP received on the mobile number entered in Step 3 and click Validate.

How to check PAN Aadhaar linking status
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Department’s official website - incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: Open the Quick Links section and select Link Aadhaar Status
Step 3: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Card number
Step 4: Click on the ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’ option
Step 5: The screen will show you the PAN-Aadhaar link status
If your PAN Card and Aadhaar are linked, the screen will display linked; otherwise, it will display the details to link the two cards.
