Has EPFO extended ECR deadline from Oct 31?
Employers were earlier given an extension from October 15 to October 31, 2026, to complete the ECR filing and complete the contribution process.
With the September filing involving a change in the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, and the new ceiling is also impacting the employer’s contributions to an employee’s EPF, Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Equity Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), employers were given the deadline extension to October 31.
In this extra time, the EPFO had asked employers to complete their ECR filing and depositing funds for employees’ EPF, EPS and EDLI accounts. The EPFO said that employers should ensure that they apply the prescribed contribution calculations correctly while filing the return.
Employers need to file the ECR on the EPFO portal on a monthly basis. It has wage details of employees and PF contribution paid to them.
The ECR filed for September is important as the government's increased wage ceiling came into effect on September 17, 2026. As a result, an employer’s contributions will be calculated at the 15,000 and Rs 25,000 ceilings both.
What are the ECR-related changes employers need to make for September 2026?
For September 1 to 16, an employer’s EPF, EPS and EDLI contributions will be calculated at a Rs 15,000 ceiling, while for the period from September 17 to September 30, the contributions will be calculated at the Rs 25,000 ceiling.Earlier, the EPFO had announced the ECR filing deadline for September as October 15. But it later extended the deadline to October 31, 2026, to give employers more time to file and pay.
The EPFO also posted an example on X, showing how an employer can file the ECR for an employee earning basic salary of Rs 20,000.
Employers need to cross-verify the revised contribution calculations before filing the ECR so that no mistake is made while filing the return.
