From PIN to DIGIPIN: Govt launches tools for accurate address mapping

The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has unveiled two key digital platforms — ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’. Launched on May 27, 2025, these portals represent a transformative leap in India’s geospatial and postal infrastructure, in line with the National Geospatial Policy 2022.

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a geo-coded, grid-based digital address system created in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It allows precise location identification and aims to redefine how addresses are managed across government and private sectors through Address-as-a-Service (AaaS).

Users can retrieve their DIGIPIN using their geolocation or by entering latitude and longitude coordinates. The system enhances location accuracy, simplifies logistics, and facilitates accurate service delivery. It is now available to government bodies and individuals for wide-scale integration.

By serving as an additional address attribute, DIGIPIN enables organisations to leverage GIS-based tools for more effective planning and operations. It is a step towards digitalising service delivery using location intelligence. The system is open-source, with all resources available on GitHub for nationwide adoption.

The Department of Posts conducted a geo-referencing exercise to map postal boundaries using global navigation satellite system (GNSS), setting the stage for more accurate and responsive postal services.

This portal enables users to determine the correct PIN Code based on their location and provide feedback on its accuracy. This ongoing user input helps in refining and updating the national PIN Code dataset.
