Dhanteras bank holiday: Are banks open or closed today, November 6, 2026

In many parts of India, Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi, will be celebrated today (Friday, November 6, 2026). Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day festival of Diwali. The day is considered auspicious for buying gold, silver, utensils and other valuable things.

Many people also go to banks to complete the pending banking work before festive celebrations. This could leave bank customers wondering whether the branches will remain open on Dhanteras today.

Are banks open or closed today on November 6, 2026?

Today is Dhanteras, and banks in India will remain open today, November 6, 2026. The festival of Dhanteras is not a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Customers of public and private sector banks including State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank can visit their respective bank branches and complete their bank-related tasks as usual.

Which banking transactions can be completed at a bank branch?

Internet banking, mobile banking and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have enabled most routine banking transactions, but some services may still require customers to visit a branch in person.

For large cash deposits, customers may have to go to a branch. They may also need to visit a branch to get a demand draft or a pay order issued. The bank locker can be accessed only at the branch where the locker is taken.

The bank branch may ask the nominee or legal heirs to fill in claim forms and submit supporting documents. If you have an error in your account information or transaction history, you will need to submit a written request and proof at the bank branch.

But you don't need to visit a branch for every one of these transactions. This will depend on bank rules, bank type, amount of transaction, account status and the availability of digital services. Customers should check with their respective banks before visiting a branch.
