Chennai metro discontinues CMRL travel card and urges users to switch to Singara Chennai Card; Know what happens to your money

The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has discontinued the CMRL travel card and said that metro users should use the Singara Chennai Card powered by National Common Mobility technology.

In a post on X, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation said (Tamil):

• சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனத்தின் பயண அட்டை (Travel Card) பயன்பாட்டிலிருந்து முழுமையாக சிங்கார சென்னை அட்டைக்கு (தேசிய பொது போக்குவரத்து அட்டை) மாற்றம்
  சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனம், மெட்ரோ இரயில்களில் பயணிக்க சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனத்தின் பயண அட்டையுடன் கூடுதலாக 14.04.2023 முதல் “சிங்கார சென்னை அட்டையை (தேசிய பொது போக்குவரத்து அட்டை)” அறிமுகப்படுத்தியது. இந்திய அரசின் வழிகாட்டுதல்களின்படி, இந்தியா முழுவதும் உள்ள பொதுப் போக்குவரத்துச் சேவைகளில் தடையற்ற பயணத்தை உறுதி செய்யும் வகையில், 01.05.2026 முதல் சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனம் “சிங்கார சென்னை அட்டைக்கு (தேசிய பொது போக்குவரத்து அட்டை)” முழுமையாக மாற திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது.
• எனவே, மெட்ரோ இரயில்களில் பயணம் செய்யவும், மெட்ரோ வாகன நிறுத்தங்களை பயன்படுத்தவும், பயணிகள் தங்களது பழைய பயண அட்டையில் மீதமுள்ள தொகையை, சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனத்தின் மொபைல் செயலி (Mobile App) மூலம் பெறப்படும் QR Stored Value Pass (SVP) அல்லது தேசிய பொது போக்குவரத்து அட்டைக்கு மாற்றிக்கொள்ளுமாறு கேட்டுக்கொள்ளப்படுகிறார்கள்.
• அனைத்து பயணிகளுக்கும் பாதுகாப்பான, நம்பகமான பயண அனுபவத்தை வழங்க சென்னை மெட்ரோ இரயில் நிறுவனம் உறுதியுடன் உள்ளது. இதனால் ஏற்பட்ட சிரமங்களுக்கு வருந்துகிறோம். உங்கள் மேலான ஆதரவைத் தொடர்ந்து எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம்

In a post on X, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation said (English): “Discontinuation of CMRL travel card. CMRL has introduced Singara Chennai Card – National Common Mobility Card since 14.04.2023 in addition to the CMRL Travel card. As per Government of India guidelines CMRL has planned to completely switch over to Singara Chennai Card – National Common Mobility Card from 01.05.2026 for seamless travel in public transports of India."

What happens to your money in CMRL travel card

Chennai Metro Rail Corporation said on X that for further usage in metro trains or at metro parking, passengers have to transfer the remaining value of CMRL travel card to QR Stored Value Pass (SVP) purchased through CMRL Mobile App or National Common Mobility Card (Singara Chennai Card or any other NCMC).

What is the Singara Chennai Card?

The Singara Chennai Card issued by State Bank of India is a contactless dual interface (EMV chip enabled) prepaid card with stored value functionality, for providing a safe, secure and seamless way of payment. Apart from a simple way to pay fares in the multi modal transit like Metro, MonoRail, Buses, etc this card offers extended usage for retail payments as well as e-Commerce.

The card also has different compartments for storing amount for different utilities, the amount stored at chip which is global balance (offline balance) will be used for transit (travel) which is a unique feature of this Singara Chennai Card, while the amount stories at Host (retail balance/online balance) can be used for utilities such as retail transactions, ATM cash withdrawals (if full KYC is done), etc.
